Hey, I have a 2002 Frontier XE 2.4l, and I was wondering what are the best shocks for everyday driving. I need shocks that give a smooth ride since I use my truck for work. I replaced my stock shocks with some cheap autozone ones and the ride is very bumpy. I was thinking about getting Bilstein's. Any suggetions? Thanks!

I think more information is needed before making a suggestion.

How do you define "bumpy" when using those cheap Autozone shocks? Are you talking small-bump compliance (like driving on a freeway) or big hit impacts (like speed bump size)?

What was wrong with the stock shocks? In other words, assuming they were in fine working condition, what didn't you like about their ride characteristics?

I bought the Bilstein shocks in the heavy duty series in my 2nd gen. I'm very happy with them.

Autozone had cheapies at $17 for the gabriel guardians. I went big-baller style with the $25 pro guards. They have a bigger piston than OE. I am actually surprised how big of a difference between the stockers w/ 103k miles on them. Really firmed up the ride without jiggling and shaking around. Not bad over bumps and whatnot, and since my truck is all stock suspension, 2wd, stock size tires, I probably don't need to say how much off-roading I do, but on the road they work great! I mean, I guess you can count dirt road as off road, in that case I go off road!! Haha

Gotta get my mom to fire up that old sewing machine and make me some curtains for that shell! Keep those tweakers' eyes off my stuff! =)

After my stock shocks crapped out around 50k miles, I picked up some bilsteins and absolutely love them. One of my stock shocks in the rear actually broke off with the lower ring still attached to the truck and the rest just hanging free. I was unimpressed to say the least. Since replacing with the bilsteins, the truck feels like new and is great offroad and on. They are a bit pricey, but you definitely get what you pay for in this case.

On the cheaper side

I got the Monroe Reflex Monotubes from Rock because I wanted to buy American...and they have "Made in Canada" on the box. I love my Canadian bro's so I put them on and I gotta say, they are a very big step over the AZ Gabby Ultras that I put on last year (and are already shot). IF they last, I will be very pleased as they were not expensive. If they don't I'm gettin' the Bils...

Nothing much to add but I have a 2000 4x4 and need to replace shocks. It is not my primary anymore as I have a 2011 Pro4X. So my question... are the Monroe Maticplus shocks OK? In the last six years I have only put about 19,000 on the truck. It has 125,000 on it now and the original shocks have all but given up.
Thanks...

I just went to bilsteen 4600 after 215,000 miles on the OEM and they're a little stiffer than the OEM but not too bad like an off-road shock.
