I am going to have to replace my roof rack on my new '03. While I'm at it, I'm wondering if there is a way to incorporate the design of the later model Xterra's roof racks and their storage bin. In searching the forum, one member mentioned the storage bin is too deep for our standard rack installation. How high would you have to raise the roof rack? Is there anything other than complete custom fab to make this idea work? I'd even consider adapting an old X roof rack in replacing my own.

FRONT-ERRA roof rack
Hi Nomar,
I did happen to install 2001 x-terra rack on my 2003.
It did need some semi-radical modifications, i.e cutting/welding
I had to cut off the rear portion and use some of it to fabricate the new legs
some 2" inches longer than the (old mid-legs).
Here's how it looks!!

I love adapting that to the extended cab. I saw that in a previous post and think its great.
That is the "storage bin" I've seen on the Xterras. It attaches to the bars I guess but as someone else has previously pointed out the roof of the Xterra has a noticable change in height that allows their rack (and thus the one you have) to sit much higher.
I want to stick with the same height. My plan is to come up with a similar basket that snaps into place on mine but carries the same Xterra look. I'm really surprised no one else has done this already. I'll have to see about getting one and modifying it...?
