I was going to order two gaskets from Rock Auto until I saw the shipping cost.
Two of the same gaskets. Flat plenum gaskets.
Parts $8.98
Shipping $9.99.
I checked to see what it would cost to just get one of them.
one gasket $4.49
Shipping $6.99
Can't understand how they calculate their shipping prices.
I think it's a rip off.
Anyone know of a place that is more honest with their shipping???

I have almost stopped buying from Rock Auto because of their shipping. I don't mind paying for shipping. But when you pay for full shipping better not take 1 week for the "handling" portion of it.

Some times they will ship items from multiply warehouses. Each with it's own shipping fee. Delete the items so that items from only 1 warehouse is selected. Go to refreash, and the remaining selected items are now shipped from different warehouses again.

I find that I purchase many of my items from Amazon, and ebay. Jut search the part number.

Go to google you can always find a 5% off coupon there.
I’m waiting for an 8 pound control arm with ball joint and shipping was $8
Size may be your factor in that price.

I'm not going to say that their shipping prices are completely justifiable, but far too many people take offense to shipping charges these days. Most of the stuff I buy from them comes USPS. depending on the size of the plenum gasket RA could be charged as much as what they are charging you.
With Amazon & (because of the 800lb gorilla) most everyone else charging $0 or near $0 for shipping, when someone does charge people flip out. I don't get it. Amazon has been proven to not be the best price around. They just are the most convenient, especially if you happen to have Prime. I frequently find stuff cheaper elsewhere. But Amazon promises to have it at my door in 2 days...

Shipping a package costs money, there is no way around it. Paying a person to pick the part off a shelf, package it and process the paperwork costs money.

If you aren't checking multiple sources for cost of the identical part and shipping charges you are doing yourself a disservice. Most places that are offering "free" shipping on all orders are just working the cost in to the parts price. NO ONE is absorbing all shipping costs...

A few times I've grouped an order with a friend so we could get the "free shipping on orders over $99" a few places offer.

Always remember, these places exist to make a dollar, not to be your friend.

While shipping may be more expensive than amazon and others, I find they rarely make mistakes and shipping is FAST.

Just last week I had ordered up 70lbs of parts (drums, rotors, etc) shipping cost was $17 and it showed up the next day, pretty hard to beat that...

I have nothing but good things to say about RockAuto. They always have the part I'm looking for cheaper than other places and the no frills website is really nice to use. My fridge has somethings like 30 magnets from all the orders I've placed through them over the years now.

Yesterday I ordered two motor mounts for my '98 Frontier, and shipped cost was $50 ($7.99 shipping cost, AZ from CA). Autozone or O'Reilly price would've been $140 plus tax, also special order. I'm slated to receive the mounts Thursday afternoon, and I ordered late afternoon Tuesday.

lol sure, but its 2018 now, most if not every single company has come eCommerce , and the competition is huge, a good company that does it right say Walmart, factors all these costs INTO the price of the product. Someone had to stock the shelves, they had the product shipped to them from the get go and they have employees checking you out, yet you don't pay separate fee's for all these things, its built into the price.

Companies like Rock Auto and a few others like it, needs to step into the future, factor the costs into the price.

It's why Amazon is killing it and why other companies including Walmart are following, charging separate for shipping is getting antiquated, let alone "handling"

agree, rock auto's shipping prices are usually only good when the amount in your cart is considerable. they'll charge you $10 to ship a bolt, but also $10 to ship something that weighs 20 pounds, so it's more like a standard 'handling' charge is part of it. i just compared a few items vs amazon and if i buy 3 then rockauto is cheaper out the door, otherwise amazon costs more since the "free prime shipping" is really added into the price of the items... the amazon option is nicer if you need to return anything, that's for sure, but they definitely do not have the best prices on a lot of stuff if you shop around. on some stuff they do though, it's been my experience that it's usually the nerdy tech stuff and really popular items that they are priced very well on, like mobil 1 oil, costs the same as my local walmart and i dont have to drive there and stand in line. My favorite thing about rockauto is using their site to find/identify part numbers.

Not only that you don’t have to use your time and money for fuel and wear and tear to go get it providing the local store has it AND rock auto has parts that are the factory suppliers like Sachs and Beck Arnley. I paid $78 for the same part that advance auto wanted $124 so even paying the rock auto shipping I’m still $46 ahead and never left the house. Best part is it came in two days which the auto parts store would need the same amount of days to get to the store.

I always compare shop when looking for parts. rockauto is 90% of the time the better deal. sometimes jet.com will beat them because it just happened to be available on that site but amazon is never ahead on the price. ebay sometimes comes out ahead but you normally have shipping costs there, also.

but no one else gives me cool guy car magnets. :)

its funny. I order stuff and the first thing I do is dig through the box to find the magnet, ha ha ha. I am hoping to get a vehicle I actually own, I suppose

RockAuto is nothing but a computer program. They have no warehouses because they have no inventory. Everything is drop shipped directly from parts suppliers which collaborate with Rock.

I've found my local AdvanceAuto, with one of their 25% discount codes, gives me my parts at about the same cost as Rock, and I have them in hand in 20 minutes. No shipping risk.

Last year I got a lower control arm shipped. The UPS guy handed me a torn empty box and jumped in the driver seat before I stopped him. If I wasn't there he would have left it on the front steps, and it would have been my problem to try to get a refund/replacement.

This is true of most online retailers.

I always compare Rock auto and the couple of Auto parts stores locally and a few times I have found same part from Summit. Depending on the part, the best price can vary. However, the local parts store having it in stock or being able to get it the next day can trump a dollar or two savings from an online retailer.
