Paint those sliders as soon as you can, and before this weekend would really be ideal. They use salt on the roads here and it makes bare steel rust quickly.

Not sure i'll be able to paint them by the time we leave on Wed. There's already rust on the sliders, my plan is to grind down the rust, use some rust reformer and paint them with truck bed spray. I was planning to do this in January. I don't think the rust will eat through the bare steel that quick... Will it?

No, it won't eat through it. You'll just have some sanding to do before you paint them.

A Scotch-Brite pad should take off the rust - it'd just be surface rust after one weekend in the snow/salt.

OK, guys...the plan is to visit the Lagomarsino Petroglyphs and then head up to Virginia City. Meet at the Lockwood Market at 200 Canyon Way in Sparks (I-80 exit 22) at 9:30 am on Saturday, January 2.
