Hey guys...if you don't yet have plans for New Year's weekend, why not come to Reno? :) pointmann1029 and I were just discussing wheeling plans for the weekend and decided to extend the invitation to the CF crew.

Trail selection is a little up in the air, but the Virginia City area is a strong possibility if conditions permit. This time of year, weather and trail conditions can consist of pretty much anything (snow and ice, rain and mud, or dry and sunny and 60 degrees), so I don't think we'll have a firm plan until that week. I'd prefer to limit this run to about 5 or 6 rigs, so please try to commit soon if you are interested in attending.

The trail will be appropriate for a stockish rig with recovery points and good tires. But if inclement weather is forecasted, I expect everyone who attends to come prepared (boots, jacket, gloves, hat, shovel, etc).

This trail run will be held on Saturday, January 2. If there is any interest, I may also consider leading a trail on Friday the 1st.

EDIT: The plan is to visit the Lagomarsino Petroglyphs and then head up to Virginia City. Meet at the Lockwood Market at 200 Canyon Way in Sparks (I-80 exit 22) at 9:30 am on Saturday, January 2.

Have fun guys! I will be doing the main part of my move starting that day. Sue will already have the X and the Frontier is a bit low for off roading.

Just to try to generate a little enthusiasm...here is a sampling of pics from some past trail runs in the Virginia City area...

What a fun day that was! That snow covered trail over the mountain from Virginia City was a blast. You are making me nostalgic with the pic's of my now departed truck....

Dang it.... why did you have to pick that w/e! I can't make it as I have concert tickets for the 2nd in Santa Cruz..... This would have been a perfect first run for my new rig. Oh well....

If you guys go, I believe Reno has fireworks on New Year's Eve, though the lights in the street take away from the show a bit.

Reno/Virginia City Trail Run Fri 1/1

There is a fireworks show in downtown Reno. A lot of locals avoid the crowds and the light pollution at these things by driving up into the foothills to watch the show. I don't go out for New Year's Eve, so I've never actually watched the fireworks display or participated in any of the other festivities that happen around town.

If there are no objections, let's change the official run to Sat 1/2...with Fri 1/1 being a "maybe" for a second trail at this point. I'll change the thread title this evening when I have access to an actual computer.

Sounds good!

I'm still a little confused...
There might be a run on 1/1, to INCLUDE fireworks from the foothills? (We'd be in for that, but we would like to retire in a room for our anniversary)

Since 1/2 IS wheeling, we would also attended this. assuming we attend 1/1.

Whatever happens on day one, put me down for a MAYBE for 1/2 lol

Sorry for the confusion...the official run is 1/2, with 1/1 being a possibility but that would just be a day trip. Fireworks were just another suggestion for anyone who plans on being in town for the weekend.

I hope you make it.

My job is super busy this time of year, and with the lack of major interest I'm still strongly leaning toward making this a one day event (Sat 1/2) and nixing the idea of a Friday trail in case I decide I need to go into work this weekend.

Tentative plan is possibly to run the Ophir Trail from Washoe City to Virginia City, but it's not a trail that I am familiar with. If need be, we can turn around and run up Jumbo instead. Maybe visit the big air shaft in VC and then run another trail afterwards (time permitting). Pointmann, you have a LOT of say in this decision since I'm basically planning this for you. ;)

Plans this time of year are always subject to change due to things like snow. With this year's El Nino, Reno has been hit with storm after storm after storm since early November. (In fact there is snow on the ground right now.) We can set up a tentative plan but it won't be finalized until the week of.

If anyone feels like they need two trail days to drive all the way up here, I am doing another Reno meet the last weekend in January that will include Saturday and Sunday.

These will more than likely be the last two CF events I organize for a while, just in case that detail influences anyone's decision.

Hey Jen I really appreciate all the planning you've done and CF posts to get other people to join. If it turns out to be just the two of us I am completely fine with cancelling all together. It looks like your year end is picking up so please don't feel like you need to plan your schedule around this event. There will be other runs in the future. :)

"Picking up" might be an understatement. Last year was my first year with this company, and our annual review/audit was in mid-February. This year my boss asked if I thought it would be OK if the auditors came on Jan 11. Sure thing, let me just clone myself first...

We don't need to cancel though. I'm sure I'd end up going wheeling at least one day that weekend anyway. It's therapeutic to me. ;)
