So I got tired of stuff falling off my backseat when I’m out hunting and camping, simple solution right? Rip that thing out and make it flat! Did some searching around and there weren’t many people who had done it with our rigs so I just kinda winged it. First the tear out, I took everything out except the sub. I thought about making my own sub box to make it smaller but I stuck with the factory one.
I didn’t take a picture after the full remove but here’s the general idea.
I needed to raise the level of the floor and give something in the rear for the platform to attach to, so I used the mounting bolts for the rear seat and attached a 2x4
I drilled out the mount holes and used the factory hardware.
After that was in, I took some measurements and went to the hardware store. I wanted both the back wall and platform to be one piece so I bought 2 4x8 sheets of 3/4 birch. Sheets were around 80 bucks each but it seemed like the best option for strength. I went the easy route and just cut the platform in a rectangle instead of trying to make contours. I went as wide and long as I could so the platform measured at 52x35 which puts it up almost to the center console, but leaves enough room for the front seats to be moved all the way back still.
first test fit looks good! Measure multiple times and cut once. If you look the only trim piece I kept are the dark corner ones and trimmed them as plumb and even as I could.
Next was to tackle the front brace that goes over the transmission tunnel. I got the truck level as I could in the yard, then put a level on the platform and took a measurement on both sides. Came out with 8 inches, so I cut another section at 52x8. After it was cut I put it in and flushed it up on the front and both sides to mark the tunnel cut. Same thing for this no contours just went with a straight cut to make life easy. I gave it a little gap so it would sit flush on the floor and not rest on the tunnel. I also cut a 2x4 to go on the tunnel in the middle to provide some support.
On to the back wall! Same thing here, made it easy and cut a rectangle. It comes up to where the back window starts so I didn’t block the rear window. I think it was 52x22. To secure it I used the factory mounting points that were flat. I measured and marked everything out and used a spade bit to recess the holes and make them large enough to fit the factory hardware. Then used 4 inside corner L brackets to secure the bottom. I used a framing square to square it up to the platform and secured it.
