So I got tired of stuff falling off my backseat when I’m out hunting and camping, simple solution right? Rip that thing out and make it flat! Did some searching around and there weren’t many people who had done it with our rigs so I just kinda winged it. First the tear out, I took everything out except the sub. I thought about making my own sub box to make it smaller but I stuck with the factory one.

I didn’t take a picture after the full remove but here’s the general idea.

I needed to raise the level of the floor and give something in the rear for the platform to attach to, so I used the mounting bolts for the rear seat and attached a 2x4

I drilled out the mount holes and used the factory hardware.

After that was in, I took some measurements and went to the hardware store. I wanted both the back wall and platform to be one piece so I bought 2 4x8 sheets of 3/4 birch. Sheets were around 80 bucks each but it seemed like the best option for strength. I went the easy route and just cut the platform in a rectangle instead of trying to make contours. I went as wide and long as I could so the platform measured at 52x35 which puts it up almost to the center console, but leaves enough room for the front seats to be moved all the way back still.

first test fit looks good! Measure multiple times and cut once. If you look the only trim piece I kept are the dark corner ones and trimmed them as plumb and even as I could.

Next was to tackle the front brace that goes over the transmission tunnel. I got the truck level as I could in the yard, then put a level on the platform and took a measurement on both sides. Came out with 8 inches, so I cut another section at 52x8. After it was cut I put it in and flushed it up on the front and both sides to mark the tunnel cut. Same thing for this no contours just went with a straight cut to make life easy. I gave it a little gap so it would sit flush on the floor and not rest on the tunnel. I also cut a 2x4 to go on the tunnel in the middle to provide some support.

On to the back wall! Same thing here, made it easy and cut a rectangle. It comes up to where the back window starts so I didn’t block the rear window. I think it was 52x22. To secure it I used the factory mounting points that were flat. I measured and marked everything out and used a spade bit to recess the holes and make them large enough to fit the factory hardware. Then used 4 inside corner L brackets to secure the bottom. I used a framing square to square it up to the platform and secured it.

Brackets are in and you can see a few of the mounting points. I was going back and forth about putting a door in the floor to help access the space on the passengers side. I ended up doing it but didn’t take any pictures in the process. I cut it 14x14 and used a piano hinge. I cut two pieces of the 3/4 and put it on the underside it both front corners as a stopper, then drilled a hole to put a finger in to open it. Also not pictures is a piece of 3/4 bracing I put above the sun to support the center on the drivers side. I also made a support for the passengers side that will be shown in another picture.

Now it was time to decide how to protect it. I opted for speaker box carpeting. I took the truck over to a local audio store and they measured it up for me. Carpeting cost 20 bucks. I went with spray adhesive to glue it onto the the majority of the decking. I did all this in the truck, I really didn’t feel like pulling everything out at this point.

Carpets in! You can see the brace that was added to the passengers side to support the area for the cubby. I took the carpet to the edge and stapled it to secure it. I would have liked to wrap it around to make it cleaner but figured that it was more likely to get snagged and ripped when pulling stuff out. Note: speaker box carpeting is surprisingly tough to cut.

Last but not least, the door opening. I went with keeping both sides open for easier access to all the goodies.

Well that’s it! So far I’m very happy with how it turned out. I want to add some tie down points on the back wall to secure packs, guns, whatever I might need. This will also be a nice addition when my 7 week old German Shepard puppy gets bigger. If anyone has questions or things you see that could improve function let me know.

Great job! I really like, and use, the space behind the seats in my K-cab. I folded the seats up before I drove it off the lot. In my case access to my golf clubs, and occasionally my guns , is easy and they stay where I put them. If I could I'd install a rear-seat-delete kit in my Mustang, but they don't fit convertibles.

Thank you! I’m actually out hunting right now and it’s been great for a couple guns and two packs. Makes getting to everything easy and no worries about guns and optics moving on poop roads.

I thought about doing something similar if I ever buy a 12v Fridge. Since the seats are 60/40, I may remove the 60 and keep the 40 as a jump seat. Then I'll add a drawer/cabinet door under the 60. Looks great 👍
Thank you! I also have thought about a fridge. Maybe one day, t swap first.

I’ve been mulling over the same thing. I’m sure my 90 lb beast of a dog would appreciate a flat spot back there.

Have you noticed an increase in cab noise after removing the seat backs? In my CC if I fold down the backs the noise really goes up. I'm thinking about adding some dynomat under the plastic facia to knock it down some when the backs are down.

Looks like a great project! You could add an inverter and stick in a frig and microwave!

I did two layers of dyno behind the rear seats a few yrs back, worth the time and effort, much quieter.

No more noise than before, honestly maybe even less noise than before. When I pulled everything I thought about insulating it, but didn’t care enough 😂.

The thought has crossed my mind to put a fridge in there, but right now rifles fit perfectly laying across

the platform measured at 52x35
Thanks for mentioning that. I thought of removing the seats and making a platform basically as you've done with the idea of making a small bunk.

In addition to what I mentioned, I thought of removing the 40 and keeping the 60. So in a pinch I can have three belted passengers. But as of lately, I carry the fridge in the bed so the seat removal hasn't been needed.

I considered that too, but I was the contrary. Decided that it probably wouldn't be worth the time and effort because the Good Year Wrangler Ultra Terrains already hum like four bad wheel bearings. Glad it worked out for you though.

I think I could sleep back there in a pinch but I wouldn’t be great.

Nice. It is a huge upgrade and creates so much space. I was really surprised how much more room there was.

Adding some sound deadener makes a huge difference. It's a pain, but surprising how much nicer it is.

There really is a lot more room and you can store a lot under the platform.

I probably should have but the noise from my 33 m/t honestly hasn’t gotten any worse. The panels seal it up pretty well so I would actually say there’s less noise now.

Is it true these sound deadener's adhesive literally stinks after installation? If so, for how long?
