My truck has been doing this for quite a while but I have been ignoring it lol When I turn my wheels as far as they will go either direction(usually in a parking lot or making a U-turn) I get this loud popping sound from whichever wheel is on the outside of the turn once I start moving. It was just happening every now and then when I would make a sharp turn, usually when that wheel hit a bump or a dip, but now it is doing it more, even on flat pavement. I haven't noticed any other affects, just the noise. It's probably nothing bad, but I am just curious. Anyone know what this is?

I am pretty sure my CV's are fine. I have been looking around on here and clubx and I think it might be the steering stops rubbing which are making the noise, I know they are worn down pretty bad. I am going to go check out my CV's right now and make sure the boots aren't cracked and everything looks right, though.

bad CVs maybe?
X2
Check your boots, make sure they are still sealed.
It does not sound like rubbing, if its just a loud pop sound, rubbing would be more consistant. Could possibly be a mud flap or something that just get bound up for a rotation, then "pops" back into place.

It seems to be a common problem over on clubx and they all say it is worn steering stops. The rubber cap on the steering stop bolt gets worn off over time and then the metal contacts metal at full lock, causing a popping or squeeking noise. This is what mine look like

When I get home Thursday night, I will rub some grease on there and see if the noise goes away. If it doesn't then the problem is somewhere else, hopefully not the CV's.

PeeWee...

Mine did something similar to that a while back

I cured it by sliding under the front end and checking the tightness of the cross member bolts, and other suspension parts.

Some were actually a little loose.

Tightened them up, no more pop

I will check that out here in a little bit or tomorrow and see if that could be it, too. Thanks man.

any play in your tierods or CL?
I don't know, I will check that out too.

Dob a little grease on the steering stops.
If none of this stuff is loose, I will do that once I get home. I hope it is one of these easy problems and nothing expensive.

Steering stops is my bet....mine were worn....replaced them and no more noise !!
Did you replace them or just grease them? If you replaced them, where did you get the new ones? I think that would be a better solution than just temporarily greasing them.

my '95 hardbody did this from the day we got it at 20k miles to the day we let her go at 220k miles, apparently it was a fairly common issue in them, not sure the exact cause tho, nothing ever came of it/or broke.

maybe i'll go put some grease on them or something. but both of my trucks have always done this with no detriment

i try to avoid cutting the wheel all the way when possible, but when i have to i have to

i could see it being more of an issue for 4 wheeling where tight maneuvers are more common
