So I recently was excited to post that I found one of the factory pop-up GPS docking stations. I wired it up with a new Garmin and it ran fine for a few weeks, then randomly it lost power...

I tapped the power wire from the stereo recommended by the instructions, and used the recommended ground. I connected the wires to a spare cigarette lighter socket because the GPS plugs into a cigarette lighter, and I didn't want to cut that unit. Once it stopped working I unplugged the GPS from the new cigarette lighter socket and plugged it into the factory cigarette lighter and it powered up right away, so I know the GPS unit is good. I tested the wires on the new cigarette lighter socket with a multi-meter, and it showed there was current on the wires. My assumption was the new cigarette lighter socket was faulty so I replaced it and it still didn't work.

Can anyone help me figure this one out? I honestly can't figure out what's causing it not to work. Any troubleshooting ideas would be appreciated.

So you checked that there was 12V at the wires for the lighter Socket? Did you check to see if your ground was still attached properly and giving you no resistance? Otherwise I would take a closer look at the cigarette plug on the GPS to see if there isn't a mechanical fault that stops it working in certain positions.
