Aloha all,

Its been a while since i have posted here!. Anyways, I am installing my new lift in the next two months and I need to pick out some tires.

I think i have narrowed it down to these options.

Goodyear Wrangler MTR With Kevlar

Nitto Dune Grappler

Nitto Trail Grappler M/T

In hawaii, the only wheeling we have here is on the beach. So with that being said, I need the best out of these choices sand tire.

I have read reviews on all of these and watched many videos and they all seem very good, however I just wanted to check with you guys to see what you say, or if you may own one of these sets...

We go to the beach every weekend. Most of the beaches you dont have to air down, however when we go to our camping beach, you gotta air down to 10 - 15 psi to be able to drive out on the sand

Thanks !

your really airing down to 10-15 psi???? how many tires fall off by the time you get there?
around 18 and lowing is when your starting to risk loosing the tire down at 10 your praying to god.

if your wanting to drive on sand, big tread is your enemy. dune grapplers would be the better of the choices. but i dont think airing down that low is a good idea, without having beadlocks.

Many people air down under 18psi when on the beach or rockcrawling (I typically run 16 and I know houdini runs 12-14). It is when you get under 10-12psi that you stand a chance to pop a bead and that is somewhat dependent on wheel size.

Wizz, as many have pointed out, a mud tire is not your best option. Get a good AT in a 12.50 width, air down to desired psi and have at it.

i choose other... i frequent the dunes quite often and have used bfg a/t, bfg long trails, stock bridgestones on a 2500 silverado, yokohama ht/s, bfg MTs, and nitto terra grapplers a/t. ALL at 265/70/16. with the exception of the stock silverado tires they were 245/75/16. All the tires performed equally well when deflated to 18psi. Currently i have the nitto terra grapplers A/T, but will be going back to a H/T because i don't have time to wheel anymore and want better MPGs.

I go to 18 PSI on jsut dirt roads 12-14 PSI in sand and snow.. and never had a problem.

and to OP BFG ATs are goign to be you best sand and road tires. I'm on the desert forums and it hands down the best tire in sand and on the road. If you want just a sand tire I would look at the Desert Trax.

These tires are desinged for exactly what your looking for. Some of the best reviews I have seen from a tire.

http://www.offroaders.com/tech/AT-MT-Tires/parnelli-jones-dirt-grip.htm

"In sand these tires are great performers. With a more milder aggressiveness to its tread design, the Dirt Grips run sand in good form and propel and float rather than dig. Lateral traction is high providing good lateral stability.

And here is the home site.

Some pics I had of these tires....

And here is a size chart. Be sure to click the top, to make it bigger.

10-12 psi is standard running pressure for optimal flotation and driving on Fire Island (where I drive). When you drive on loose dry sand without airing down enough you'll dig in and get stuck. Beach driving is fairly slow and generally requires a very light foot. As for losing tires, it's never happened to me and I've never even heard of it happening to anyone else, like I said before it's standard operating procedure here.

12-15psi does work good for some softer tires but for a BFG AT which has a stiff sidewall 10-12psi is better.

My vote goes to BFG AT's. They're going to be my next set and also the 6th set purchased for me, love them.

BFG A/T would be ideal...however if you want me to pick from the 3 you have listed I would go with the DUNE GRAPPLERS.

I had BFG's in the past and didnt like the at, sec you go in mud, its over.... I would to have a cross , between at and mt, That is why i picked the goodyear and the nitto MT,

Also, when you watch people on videos, they seem to have no problem or very little problem in the sand.. so that has be wondering, does it really matter?

Anyways

I also have the toyo A/T...it's a great tire! Very quiet on the pavement and does very well off-road for an A/T tire.

Look into the Toyo at's. Im running them right now and have never had them in sand but mud they do just fine, clean out real nice and pretty quick. Close enough tread to where you should be fine in sand with airing down a bit, but still quiet and long lasting for an everyday street tire.
