Fellow CF member Chito called me up out of the blue asking if I was interested in a weekend trip somewhere in the Eastern Sierras. I suggested we do some exploration in Coyote Flat, located just southwest of Bishop, CA. Hope you all like the pictures!

This first pic is not at Coyote Flat, but at Leavitt Lake near the Sonora Pass. Camped here for the night before meeting with Chito the following day. Recent snow in the Sierras made for a stunning sunrise.

Chito going through second of two stream crossings.

Coyote Flat is mostly at 10000 ft, surrounded by peaks over 13000 ft.

Beginning of the spur heading to Funnel Lake. Some have described this section as "two miles of basketball-sized rock garden"... I'd say it's pretty close.

It was mid-afternoon, but we were already tired from all the driving earlier in the day and the 1hr it took to go 2 miles to Funnel Lake. You may be able to see our trucks where we setup camp to the right of the lake.

More exploring the next day. I had read about an old Native American camp in the area, but we could not find it.

Had lunch on top of a ridge overlooking Owens Valley below. White Mountains in the distance.

Palisade Glacier, the largest glacier in the Sierra Nevada... someday it will be gone.

Baker Creek.

We stayed in a beautiful spot for our 2nd night. Baker creek going through the meadow with Sugarloaf in the distance.

The entire area was just spectacular. The triangular peak just to the left of center is called Vagabond. And to its left is Cloudripper. Both over 13000 feet.

Shot of the Palisade Group... these peaks are over 14000 ft.

Another shot of Vagabond and Cloudripper.

Beautiful pics. I've explored some of that area before I bought my truck, looks like I need to get up there and explore some of pavement challenged sections soon!

You both have roof racks and shade covers (not sure what they are actually called...), which is high on my list of **** I need to spend money on. Do you like your current setup, and if so could you talk about what you're running?

I have Thule square bars on the camper shell. My "awning" consists of a 5'x7' nylon tarp and a couple of height adjustable steel poles. The tarp is attached to the Thule cross bar using a ball bungee. The corners are kept taught using bungee cords hooked to the fender lip. Overall, I would say it meets my needs for shade from the sun or cover from the rain. The main disadvantage when compared to the ARB-style awnings is that the corners where the poles attach need to be staked down, whereas the ARB awning is completely self-supporting. But for a total cost of less than $40, I can live with it.

It definitely came in handy during a trip on the Mojave Rd last winter:

Wow looks amazing up there. I've driven up and down the 395 many times, but never explored much.
Would love to come up for a trip!
