Was wondering if anyone out there is having a similar issue.
2005 Frontier Nismo CC: Paint has chipped from rocks right behind the rear doors near the ground where the bed starts. I have talked to the dealership and of course they say that it is something that happens. Well the truck is only 6 months old (i have owned that long and bought it with 60 miles) so I am a bit ticked about this little flaw. Anyone have any ideas on this one or what I can do to prevent this from happening. It sucks to say the least. I attached a pic of the driveside paint chips .. all the white dots are chips. It has just made me angry :x
Thanks in advance!

Yea mine is the same way, actually mine looks worse then yours and I have only had my Fronty about 4 months. My ride is silver though so the chips are not as noticeable. I just got bigger tires to so they are probably only going to get worse. I am planning on buying some side steps and I'm hoping these will help eliminate the amount of stones that fly up.

I have lots of chips, but most of mine are on the front lower bumper that I had painted and on the hood and area above the chrome bumper. It looks like from your picture you have chips in the clear covered area as well. How did that happen?

There is another thread on this and they got the clear coating on the rear fender area only it is much larger than what the factory used. I have been thinking about doing it, but the cost is about $500 for the complete job and is not in my budget right now.

Wow!! All I can say is "That really sucks!!" It has to be the manufacturer's problem if you ask me. I've had mine through construction sites, sanded mountain roads and offroading in the mountains and I don't think I have any chips in that area of my truck. I do have a couple on the hood and couple on the front fenders but that's it so far. Thank God!!

Jcapler,

Believe me I know how you feel. I have the same problem and took it to my dealership last week. The service manager mentioned extending the 3M protector higher up to protect the location behind the rear doors. The Nissan rep is going to inspect my truck this Thursday.(Rock Chips like Crazy) Also coming straight from the dealership with mud flaps and running boards, the edges of the rear bumper are all chipped and actually RUSTING. Yeah Rusting and 4 mths old.

Hopefully we can resolve this locally or else I will be emailing Nissan Canada directly.

I noticed a couple of small chips along the metal top part of the bed that is right underneath the rear window that had already rusted out. And that was the day after I brought my truck home. Looked like something definitely whacked it... dealer tried to charge me 15 bucks for touch-up paint but it didn't take too much convincing to get them to just give it to me. At least it's not a very obvious spot and the paint matched very well!

I have no clue what happened. I am thinking of contacting Nissan directly because the dealership wants nothing to do with this and thinks it is just a regular thing (sometimes I hate going to them). Anyway as of now I have ordered larger clear plastic (3M) and I am going to have that put on. I am just frustrated with this whole thing, you spend so much on a truck you want and stupid things like this happen ... just frustrating!!!
As far as the chips under the clear plastic you are correct, there are paint chips and I have no idea what that is from. I really havent taken it off road to much and not enough to have that happen. I said something to the dealership about the chips under the plastic and there reason for this was that "Rocks come off the tires with a lot of force". Stupid, again this is the times when I hate going to them.
Should I email Nissan about this or what? Are they easy to deal with?

I think I would contact Nissan and furnish them a copy of your photo. I cannot ima-
gine a rock penetrating the clear coating back there without leaving a dent. that
coating is pretty tough and if there is not a hole in the coating I do not see how a chip could happen unless the truck was driven for a time without the clear coating on it.
What's up with that happening.

I can understanf the chips around the clear coating, but not underneath the coating. Good luck and let us know what happens.

I think I am going to contact them .. I talked to the dealership again today and they are not looking to work with me. So I guess I can either deal with it, pay to have it fixed, or move up the chain with my complaints. I will keep posting to keep all involved up to date. Hope this goes smoothly and hope they are willing to fix the issue.

It seems as though the paint chips are ocurring mostly on the black and white version of our trucks. I'm just wondering if anyone with a different color is having the same problems? I have a Storm Gray, and I guess from all of these reports I have been very lucky. Anyway good luck with Nissan, I really think that its their problem to handle. Let us know what happens.

rock chips

You guys with significant amount of chips should let us know what tire you have. Some pick up and throw rocks more than others.

Also, chips are part of paint jobs - they happen. Some more than others due to road type, driving habits, tires, and levels of protection. Prevention is the best paint protection.

My wifes '06 Lexus has chips in the front facia and on the hood. Upset? Yeah. Now I get the idea to touch-up and use the 3M protectant film. Not blaming Lexus for it. Just have work with it.

Yeah rock chips are a part of life and stuff happens right. But get this, I have a 2005 fronty (Black) LE CC with Step Guards and Factory installed mud flaps. And the edges of the black bumper are actually rusting (YEAH RUSTING) . Now don't you think that is a design Flaw on Nissans Part? Mud Flaps purpose: Protect the body from flying debris as well as the following vehicles. Step guards are also a debris body guard. So in reality the mud flaps are not doing anything or Nissan didn't make them long and wide enough for stock rims n tires. 4 mths old and rust. Yeah I know suck it up like everyone else but it just Pisses me off to no end especially paying almost $38k. :x Rant over.

05FRONTY,

I'm totally with you on this. Sometimes paint chips are a part of driving a car but that to me is ridiculous. If this were my truck having all of these problems with the paint I would be really pissed as well. I'm the kind of car owner that takes pride in the way the exterior of my truck looks. This would drive me crazy!! I would not sit down to Nissan on this. If you have rust after 4 months, this is definatly their problem, especially with all of the preventative part like mud flaps and running boards. Like I said before It seems as though its only the black and white that are having the problem. Obviously some worst than others. Unfortunatly this probably leaves a bad rep for you with Nissan. I'm very sorry this is happening to so many frontiers and owners. I hope Nissan clears this up with everyone with this problem. Wishful thinking I guess??

Well just spoke with the Nissan Dealership this morning. The rep looked at the truck last week and basically said the paint was normal and environmental debris (rocks, sand , chips are things that happen). OKay I can deal with that but in regards to the bumper he said basically the same thing . Crap flying up from the tires. "I'm like no s#!t Rocket Scientist" I was soo mad . Telling him to investigate the Flaw design. But he wouldn't budge so I will be progressing further with this. In the mean time the Dealership offered to touch up and polish all rock chips and the rusting bumper free of charge. The dealership manager even went to other car lots and investigated other trucks to see if the same thing was happening. But I think that was just a waste of time. But anyways he did see on some other trucks they had (similiar to door stripping) running around the edges of the bumper and will do the same for me no charge. Hell in my mind the Service manager at my dealership has done more for me then the stupid *** Nissan rep.

Sorry for the novel just thought I would update you guys on what happened.

arnold,

Thank you for the information, I'll put it in my file for when I go in for this complaint.
I don't think I have enough at the present time to get them to do anything.

I wonder if they will do a TSB on this? It also only mentions scratches so it may not apply to nor help our paint chips. Time will tell. If anyone has this done by a dealer
please post your experience with it.
