Any new info about a possible route?

I officially got time off approved for this trip today. I'm still planning on most likely booking a hotel for the Thursday night and meeting you guys at camp Friday morning. I'll need to know where camp will be once that info is available.
Route is set. See post #2 in the meet thread. Plan on meeting thu night/fri morning at Panamint Springs CG.

Are you 100% in now?

I added a link to the meet thread to post number 1 in this thread. It kept getting pushed further down my list of subscribed threads and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Yeah, you may as well change me to 100%.

A couple questions...

Panamint Springs CG is the same thing as Panamint Springs Resort? Are we getting the group site, or are we responsible for booking our own sites?

Texas Springs is first come first serve. Any danger of it filling up? Is there a backup plan if it is full?

On the map I posted it is just called Panamint Springs. It is located on Hwy 190 just inside the park boundary near Panamint Valley Rd.

Texas Springs CG has 92 sites. Furnace Creek CG has 136 sites and takes reservations. Tom recommended this CG so maybe he can comment on the chance of it filling up. I would say that FC CG would be the backup but camping is allowed all over the park with a few restrictions that I have posted in the meet thread, so we could pick a nice spot and set up almost anywhere.

Glad to hear you are now 100%!

As far as booking sites in advance goes, I will add this -

We are traveling in a large group for long distances and things can happen that may delay us significantly, so EVERYONE needs to be prepared to camp on the trail if necessary. If you want to reserve a site for Thu 3/23 and sat 3/25, I think that would be fine but I reserve the right to change the plan due to unforseen circumstances.

After looking at the 'Resort' website, I believe they are the same place. Home - Panamint Springs Resort

A couple things I noticed on that site - 1. Showers are included with any paid camp site. 2. Dogs are welcome but are charged an additional $5 fee. There are 26 sites at $10 per night for a maximum of 5 people per site. Since I am arriving on wed, I have reserved site 28 for wed the 22nd and thu the 23rd and I also got it for sat the 25th, since it is only $10. I indicated 5 people and 1 pet (Copper) for each night, just in case.

Message from Tom R

Tom does not have his CF password with him and sent me this message via email -

"Panamint springs and panamint springs resort are the same. They have hotel rooms, camping, diner, small general store, gas, bar and ice cream shop.

Friday night camping. 1st choice Texas springs 2nd furnace creek 3rd sunset 4th drive up 5 miles to echo canyon road camp 1 mile from the road. The campsites are $16/night and allow 2 cars per site so we can double up. Finding a space should not be an issue unless we get another super bloom. We had one this year and they come every 10 to 20 years.

Furnace creek has all amenities.

Park pass- the nearest self serve kiosk is at stovepipe wells. We should be okay though getting one on Friday. If stopped just tell the ranger we came in from saline valley and we are picking on up that night. Never had an issue."

Glad you will be there with us thu night Jen!

Me too! I want to camp, I just don't want to have to worry about pitching a tent Thursday night. ;)

Tom can contact me if he needs a password reset.

EDIT: For any other lateish arrivals, it looks like you check in at the general store, which closes at 9:30 pm.

Plotting this out on Google maps, it looks like our longest stretch between gas stations will be approximately 130 miles.

That $500 Rotopax setup I was contemplating is getting hard to justify (not to mention the other $2K in bed mods that I'd need to do first), and I'm struggling to come up with any cheaper alternatives. I don't have Utilitrac, I want to drill any holes prior to getting the bed mods done, I don't want to count on having those mods done before March (my financial position has changed somewhat), and I only have 16" of clearance under my tonneau cover. Ugh...

Two 10-liter jerry cans mounted in milk crates that are secured with ratchet straps? I want to be safe... :-/

I'd go with Jerry cans, especially since you're in NV and you can buy the real NATO cans that don't have to be CARB approved. There's a thread on TNX by Chris Haynes about where to buy and what seals you might need.

Jen and everyone- I have have run these routes multiple times with vehicles including my X, an Isuzu Trooper, Isuzu Amigo, and mid 2000 Wranglers. No issues with running out of fuel, provided everyone starts with a full tank. We always started from and finished at Texas Springs, so the round trip was an additional 50 miles. We always finished with about 1/4 tank. Panamint Springs fuel will be expensive - expect $5-6/gallon. Start saving now for that extra $30 for a fill up.

I am now 100% in. I'll be arriving late on the 23rd. Looking froward to this.
Excellent Tom! Thanks for the update.

Jenn do you have a link somewhere with the Google map layout? I saw Brian's map he posted with the written directions but I'm having a hard time finding the Texas campground on the map.

I didn't save the map when I calculated the mileage on Google, but it's near Furnace Springs.

It's actually quite frustrating that I visited four different web sites that showed Texas Springs in four different places. I believe the correct location is off Texas Springs Road just east of Furnace Creek. Google maps should take you right to it.

Tom, can you confirm that is the correct location?

On this map, there is a smaller detailed view of Furnace Creek at the upper right corner. It shows Texas Springs CG E of Hwy 190 between Furnace Creek Ranch and Furnace Creek Inn.

This is a different map than I posted in the meet thread.

Here is a map that shows the detail for the area around Furnace Creek at the upper right - Death Valley detailed map

The map I posted previously is the best one for trail mileage. Mileage is not shown on trails in the above map.

Looks like I'm dropping out of this trip as well - my race team signed up for a race at Sonoma on the same weekend, and I can't be at both places at once :-( . Maybe I can make a Mojave trip sometime during the year instead.

See you all at Moab, if not earlier.
You're running 24 Hours of Lemons???

Texas Springs CG is in Furnace Creek, on the east side of the highway. If you are coming in from the north, you will go through Furnace Creek toward the Inn. Sunset CG with all the RVs and Texas Springs are on the left. The road to both will be on the same road, which is a left turn from the highway. You will see a kiosk that is sometimes staffed. Go straight and around a small hill is Texas Springs CG. The lower loop has the best sites and is tents only. The upper loop allows RVs. No generators are allowed.

Texas Springs GPS, for those so inclined:
36.459771, -116.856332
