I am loaded and ready to leave tomorrow. I'll let you know and maybe we can meet somewhere on the east side of DV..... maybe Zabriske Point.

For those of you who haven't left yet and still have internet access... It sounds like at least a few of us are planning on having dinner at the bar and grill at Panamint Springs tomorrow (Thursday) night. Looks like they have some decent food and a large selection of beer. Last opportunity for a good meal for a couple days (assuming you're the kind of camp "cook" I am) and no dishes to do afterward. Hooray!

Brian and Tom, thank you so very much for all of the effort you both put in to making this a wonderful trip. I had a really great time. My parents did as well. All of us agreed that it was too bad we couldn't have stayed in the area longer and we want to come back again sometime.

Guess I should start shopping for a new tent before the Hollister trip. :teary:

You are very welcome Jen! Thanks to all who attended. We need to get out there again and spend more time exploring some of the more remote area's of the park. If we can plan out a week long trip next time, we should be able to take a rest day in the middle at one of the camp spots and do some hiking.

I will be posting a link to the picture and video thread shortly.

Another great trip. Spectacular scenery. Thanks Brian for organizing this run. Tom's knowledge of the area really added to the experience. And finally, thanks to Junior, Sean, and Chito for feeding me with delicious meals.

Punishment for idiot who drove on the Racetrack

Here is a link to an article with pictures that shows the damage: https://petapixel.com/2016/09/19/vandalism-iconic-racetrack-death-valley-national-park/

I was in Death Valley this past weekend and went to the Racetrack. For what it is worth, I walked a large portion of the southern part (near the parking area) and didn't see any tire tracks. There were a lot of footprints from someone walking out there when it was wet (apparently also illegal) but I didn't see tire tracks. Maybe there was enough rain this year to start to repair the damage.

Now for the good news from the ranger we spoke with. The idiot who did this has been caught after posting footage on Facebook! He was driving a 2017 Ford Raptor with every available option with a reported price tag of about $95000.

Here is the punishment so far:

1. He forfeited the truck to the Federal Gov't. The park service is going to use it in Death Valley! The rangers are stoked!
2. He was fined $30,000 (not enough in my opinion).
3. He is going to jail for some time (this phase of his trial is not complete yet).
4. He is PERMANENTLY banned from ALL Federal land. He cannot set foot on ANY Federal property without risking arrest. This includes all Nat'l parks, the mall in Washington D.C. etc.

Sweet, sweet justice.

Looks like it was an awesome trip. Can't say I'm jealous of the winds the first night, though.

Hey Brian did you get any pictures of that guy on the motorcycle at Badwater?
I did not but Tom did and I am sure he has sent them to the park rangers by now. There was a ranger in the Panamint Springs store when he was checking in and he showed them to him out in the parking lot. The ranger was sure they would prosecute the guy as they don't take that kind of stuff lightly.

For the rest of you.... to explain what Joe is asking about - A guy rode his BMW motorcycle up on the sidewalk and down onto the boardwalk at Badwater to take pictures in front of the sign. Tom and I chewed him out real good and Tom got shots of his license plate, the bike and the guy. I hope he forfeits the bike just like the idiot who drove on the racetrack....

My saying still holds true - 'Idiots are EVERYWHERE!'.

Yes, I sent the park ranger the pictures and a statement. He indicated that they have received quite a bit of vandalism in the last two years. The racetrack has been driven on 3 times, a pupfish at the Devil's Hole was killed by a couple of drunken trespassers (a big deal when less than 200 exist) and some idiot tried to drive off the road at badwater, but got stuck. He encouraged the reporting of all bad behavior.
