To everyone that has had the timing chain tensioners replaced, did the noise change at all? I mean from the time you noticed the whirring sound, till you had it fixed, did it get louder or did it stay the same? For example, say you first notice the noise when the engine is at 2k rpm, after you drove some more miles on it, did it get noticeably louder at the same 2k rpm?

I ask, because a noticed a faint whine when I start my truck up in the morning, but in the 8,000 miles since I first noticed it, the noise has not gotten any worse, ie louder, I still plan on fixing the problem but I'm trying to stretch a few more miles out of it since I don't have any time to work on it until after August.

I think I drove mine for about 7K miles with the whine. It did start out fairly faint, then became more noticeable, but not sure if it actually got much louder or if it was just something I was more aware of. Towards the end prior to fixing it, it didn't get much louder. Seemed pretty constant for the most part. Nice to have it fixed and no whine at all now though! I got mine fixed under the powertrain warranty. I hope you can do that same! Good luck.

In the end it sounded like a supercharger.

when i bought my truck it had the noise. I didnt know what it was at first then i read some stuff on here about it and decided i should replace it. I did it myself and at first i thought i tore my engine apart for nothing cause all the guides looked good, but turns out that the secondary timing chain tensioners were the ones with the problem. It was metal on metal. Changing the timing chains out is no easy task though. if i would have known how much it sucked i would have paid someone to do it. If your not 100% sure in your ability you should let someone else do it. I thought i could do it in a day....3 days later i threw in the towel, now its in the shop cause the waterpump was leaking and i didnt have the time to fix it.

I still think it's great that you tried to do it yourself. I'm sure in the end you could have fixed the leak too but understand the frustration at that point.

thanks clint. i think i could of fixed it too, but i had to work and my truck was at the auto hobby shop cause I didnt wanna not have a tool I needed. I should have done it in my drive way, that way i could have let the truck sit while I was working and not getting charged by the hour.good thing about it is that i already took off any part i would ever need to change in the engine compartment. Good practice i guess.
