Oil temperature sensor

My '19 Pro-4X just threw a P0196 which is an anomoly in the oil temp sensor (not what it expects given the coolant and air temps).

I just finished a weekend overlanding trip with some mild off roading, but today it came on about half way through a 10 minute drive before the engine really even warmed up.

I am guessing the sensor is bad, I will most likely just get a new one and change it in my driveway, just wondering what's involved in changing it, the sensor seems to be near the oil filter so I am guessing the oil needs to be drained in order to remove it? Has anyone done this before - I only found 1 other post and the guy just took it to the dealership.
You shouldn’t need to drain the oil unless the sensor screws into the oil pan, but even then you can probably manage it w/o draining it if you’re quick & there’s good access. I haven’t looked into it myself, so I’m not sure where it is. Before you throw a sensor in it I’d check the wiring & the plug. In my mind it’s more likely that your overlanding trip shook something loose than it is that the sensor outright failed.

I guess these parts rarely fail.
All the more reason to check wiring & plugs before throwing parts at it. It could be as simple as a plug that wasn’t properly seated vibrating out enough to cause anomalous readings.
