I'm sure that this has been asked a million times but I'm not finding much on search. My 2017 4cyl auto now has 3,000 miles so it's time for a decision about oil change intervals. As you know the owners manual says 5,000 miles. This works out well because I can rotate the tires at the same time but I've never really gone more that 3,000 to 3,500 miles for an oil change. Since I will be using synthetic oil and factory filter (tiny little 65F0E), my mechanic says 5,000 miles is fine. What say all of you?

The 5K change interval is easily within the specs for the engine. You and I probably grew up when 3K change intervals were the norm. With the quality of today's oils & filters, you can easily go 5000 miles. If you are in severe service environment, then I believe 3750 miles is the proper interval. Short of that kind of service, I wouldn't hesitate with a 5K interval with synthetic oil.

Sometimes your age just shows. :)

I had to chuckle when I saw your name. I have a brother-in-law Neal who lives in Nevada (pronounced with a long middle A) Missouri.

But anyway, thanks for the response. Guess I'll have to get used to these new-fangled ways.

Doing 3000 mile oil changes with synthetic oil is absolutely insane. It makes no sense at all, ever. Under normal driving conditions, 5000 on conventional oil is perfectly fine. That's why it's in the owner's manual.

If you really want to change your oil more often than you need to, do synthetic every 5000. Otherwise, do conventional every 5000.

Even back in the 80's and 90's I did 5,000 mile oil changes with conventional oil, had the opportunity to see inside of 2 engines at near 100 K each and neither had any sign of sludge or oil related issues...

I do 7,500 mile intervals with Mobil-1 full synthetic in my Impala and I did that interval on my wife's Integra and on my previous '95 Hardbody trucks. Her new Renegade tells us when the oil changes are due, first one was at ~8000 miles and second around ~17,000, requires a weird expensive Valvoline or Pennzoil 0W-20 product because the variable valve timing is controlled through oil pressure, or else I'd be running Mobil-1 in that too. Never had any problems with these longer oil change invervals, and they're only half of what Mobil claims the oil is good for anyway.

I would have no qualms about 5,000 mile intervals for oil changes. You could probably even double that with a full synthetic so long as you buy good filters. I am partial the the K&N with the welded-on nut thing so I can get them off more easily. I will probably go 5,000 mile intervals while my truck is still under warranty but wouldn't feel bad if the interval was longer.

I do a change every 6 months or 5K whichever comes first. Just like the maintenance book states. I don't drive a great deal <7,500 miles per year. The oil change interval for me comes to 2 changes per year. Had 3k on the dino oil the last change.

The vehicle is still under Nissan warranty. Till it runs out I tend to follow the time or miles guide.

Im still old school , I change it at 3000 miles on Dino oil. If you use the car so little it’s time over mileage then.

I got 4 free oil changes or something when I bought mine, but I have 1200 miles on it now and plan on changing at 2500 for the first oil change. My old experience with engines I've built I used to change them at 100 miles, 500 miles, 1000 miles then every 2500 miles. this was of course on a built mustang engine.

I wanna change the oil myself first time anyway just to learn how to do it on this truck.

Anyone know if our pistons are forged or what? how are these motors? bottom end tough and strong?

I typically change the oil on a new car between 0 and the first interval. So yes around 2.3 to 3K. I also use dino oil till about 25 to 30K before I switch to syn. I feel that dino oil is better during the break in period.
