My brother bought a house 20 minutes outside of Las Vegas. We went another 20 minutes out and found a lot of cool trails. Lots of sharp rocks. Anyway, this was my first time off-roading and just wanted to chime in and share my thoughts.
I was really impressed with the power this truck (05 KC SE 4X4 6spd) has. I pulled some pretty steep hills and didn't even feel them. I was barely pressing down on the throttle and the incline offered no resistance. Also, everyone seems to complain about the gearing of 1st gear. I never never shared that opinion, and i thought it was perfect for off-road conditions. I tend to think that those that complain about it don't use their trucks as trucks. Anyhow, when the trails ended and the trail-blazing began, it was quite clear that our trucks need a lift. I did the best I could through the rocky terrain, but I quickly reached a point where I couldn't negotiate those rocks without incurring significant sheet metal damage. My brother in his stock 03 taco was able to get over them though. When we got back, I got a tape out and found he had 3 more inches than me with respect to the height of the rocker panel.
I just wanted to throw my 2 cents in. The Frontier sure seems like a tough and capable truck.
