was thinking of attaching mt bike fork mounts directly to the rear most cross bar on the OEM roof rack.
1) has anyone done this?
2) will it be strong enough?

I had the fork mounts attached to the utilitrack under rear window and worked great, but now I installed toolboxes to the floor utilitrack and had to take the fork mounts off the back utilitrack so that the tool boxes could open unrestricted. Now, I still want to have capabilities to mount bikes even with cargo stacked up high, so I was thinking of taking the fork mounts and mounting them directly to the OEM rear cross panel of the roof rack. I would just screw into it and use ice and water shield on both sides and bolt it into place.

Thoughts?

I've carried a fair amount of long lumber on ours and think they are pretty tough and well supports. Depending on the bike weight and your target area to drive, I think for normal street stuff you should be fine.

How many bikes and what weight?

they wrap around the bar and create a point for you to attach something without destroying the strength/integrity of the bar. to use them with a fork mount, you would need 2 per mount (good thing they come in a 4-pack). then use the bolt for the mightymount through the hole for the fork mount.

hope that makes sense.

The mounts are made to fit the bar as is. Personally I wouldn't compromise the integrity of the bar by drilling through it.
