Hello All,

I have been having an issue with my fronty coming out of 4wd. When I flip the switch to go back into 2wd it won't do it for a very long time on its own, it varies but approx 30 miles or so. Now if I stop and put the truck in reverse it happens instantly. Should I be concerned? I don't use 4wd a lot maybe once every few months. But lately with all this snow I have been using it very often and I don't want to be doing unneccesary damage. I have an 05 Frontier Nismo. Anyone have any ideas? Or is this common?

Going in reverse for about 50-100 ft is really the best method. It unbinds the gears and allows it to slip right out. On older trucks, it was listed in the owners manual as the prefered thing to do. Works like a charm on mine

I have a 2008 kc, and when it's cold, it seem to stay 4x4 until warmed up... I try to drive it smoothly, then it goes off in about 5-6 miles. But when I stop to turn, I turn wheels to the left generously, then straight again, and 4x4 always goes off...

In theory once you remove load from the front it should come out. This can be done by reversing a short distance (way less than 50~100') or goosing the gas to load it up and then coast a bit.

both mine and my buddys LE's (same truck bought at same time from two diff. dealerships) do the exact same thing. Just the way it is. Doesn't bother me.

I thought all 4x4s with auto hubs were supposed to be reveresed to unlock. either that or a good quick stop.

TAcoma's do the same thing, you have to stop and back them up a few feet and then it will go to 2WD from 4WD. Its not just Nissan trucks that work like this.

it's a tire size thing. If all your tires are not inflated so they are the same size, there is a little bind. That does not mean the same pressure, as there are different loads front to rear, different wear, and all tires are not the same new. So just back up a little bit, or crank the wheel side to side. That is unless you have tons of money and can afford to weight, measure, and shave your tires to perfection:laugh:

The Cherokees I had would disengage 4wd as soon as I shifted the Tcase. However it did had an actual lever. I dont know about anyone else, but I liked having a 4wd shifter vs a swtich. Just felt beefier when shifting in and out 4wd. Of course I also like manual hubs too. Maybe I am old school.

On another note, I have had my truck since May and havent had any snow and may not get any. I dont wheel this truck (I just cant wheel something that is this new and I owe lots of money on) and was wondering if it should still be switched into 4wd periodically?

correct me if Im wrong, but the transfer case does disengage when you hit the button. The indicator light is driven off hub position. the hubs dont disengage until you back up or stop quickly (rotating mass of the front drive train carries enough momentum to unbind the hubs enough to disengage).

This is how my 2000 Trooper was setup.

there are no hubs, just a splined shaft on the end of the cv that goes through the wheel bearing assembly splines, and has a big ol nut on it.

On another note, I have had my truck since May and havent had any snow and may not get any. I dont wheel this truck (I just cant wheel something that is this new and I owe lots of money on) and was wondering if it should still be switched into 4wd periodically?
May, no mud, worried about scrathches...**thinks** k - its a truck, its been 6 months - go get some scratches and mud INSIDE that thing! enjoy your 4x4 - its a truck, not a Porsche

I just goose mine and it comes right out.....and i'll give you a good method to get mud inside your truck....first sink an f-250 to its axles in mud....then hook up to it and get yourself stuck then open the door and put it in reverse...
