So, when I set my truck to 4x4, the little image on the tach changes accordingly, but my 4WD light on the dash does not come on (the light works, it comes on when you turn the key). I don't know much about this truck yet, but the only other thing I can mention is I managed to drive it some miles (on dry asphalt) while it was in 4x4 without it binding up. Only reason I realized something was up was it felt like I was driving with a dragging brake. I've driven it in the snow in 4x4 and it seemed to behave appropriately (dropped the clutch and it took off).

It's an 07 with ~140000 miles on it with the 6 cylinder, and 6 speed manual.

The 4wd light you see during start up is a warning/malfunction light. Besides the the knob you turn below the radio, there is a 4x4 indicator light on the dash that shows you if you are in 4x4. Read the owners manual there is a lot of information in there.
