My '09 with 15k miles has recently started making a constant, not-very-loud, high pitched squealing noise. I've searched the forums and have found several threads about the belt tensioners in these trucks. However, none of those threads mentioned anything about the sound happening only when the truck is in gear (it's a 6 speed).

The noise:
1) Happens when the truck is in ANY gear. If I press the clutch pedal to change gears, the noise goes away. It comes back (and stays) when I release the clutch. If I have the tranny in neutral, the noise goes away regardless of the position of the clutch pedal.
2) The noise only happens when the engine is cold. After driving for about 10-15 minutes, the noise stops.
3) Once the truck is going over about 20 mph, vehicle speed and engine RPMs are completely irrelevant. The noise is constant and doesn't change with vehicle speed or engine speed. (If I drive very slowly in first gear, I don't hear the noise. I don't hear it in reverse either.)
4) The noise happens for just a split second right when I start the vehicle up.

Any ideas as to what might be causing this? Obviously, I plan on calling the dealership on Monday morning. But I'd like to see if I can get some information in the meantime.

Throw out bearing in your clutch.

usually that goes away or makes less noise when the clutch is pushed in/out
The first few days that I noticed the noise, it would stop when I pressed the clutch. After I released the clutch, it would come back and stay (until the truck was warmed up, at which point it would go away). The noise would also stop if I moved the shifter to neutral, whether the cluch was in or out. It was only this morning that the noise stayed constant regardless of the position of the clutch pedal or shifter. Hope that makes sense.

Most of the time the noise is just annoying and the part won't fail. I had a previous truck that the sound went away on it's own.

Still haven't taken the truck to the dealer as the sound has been intermittent. It will do it for a couple of days, and then quit for several days. The truck is due for an oil change in about 600 miles; I'm hoping the noise will be more consistent by then.

If not, and if the truck won't make the noise for the dealer, would I be out of line to ask them to replace the throw out bearing under warranty anyway? A buddy of mine (who works on big trucks for a living) looked at the truck, and he's pretty sure that's what it is. I don't want my truck sitting at the dealer for a week because they can't figure out what's wrong with it.

Four months and 9K later...truck is currently at the dealership for this noise again. It quit making the noise for a couple of months, and then started it up again several weeks ago, worse than ever. The truck decided to FINALLY cooperate and make noise for the technician today. They're pretty sure it's the belt tensioner. The reason it goes away when I press the clutch pedal is that the RPMs are dropping. If I rev up the engine with the truck in neutral, I can get it to make noise...so they're pretty sure it's not the throw out bearing. He said it should be no problem getting it fixed under warranty...*fingers crossed*.

Maybe they will do the "power steering pulley alignment" like they did on mine. it still squeaks and eventually goes away. from the description you give on your first post, my initial thought was clutch too. i had a hardbody that did the same thing. turned out to be the little things that look like springs in the disc had all split in two pieces. good luck to you.

The dealer just called and said the only thing wrong with the truck was dirt in the fan belt. I'm finding that hard to believe. Does that seem plausible, or am I going to end up back in the shop?

Also, if that really was the issue...doesn't that mean I'm going to have to have the stupid fan belt cleaned every 15K? That was the mileage when the problem first began, and I drive this truck in the dirt all the damn time.

never heard of dirt in the fan belt, that should get knocked out. If you are still here ten yrs later, what was it?

On the throw out bearing, for anyone reading through... Yes, it could be your fault if that bearing goes out. Minimize the time the clutch is held in. Do not sit at a stop with clutch pedal down, in gear. That is making the bearing spin, and wear. Put in N asap, and let clutch pedal up.
My old Dodge at least was this. They taught me that when trans went out, but clutch and bearing were fine in my case.
