On my old daily driver hotrod (71 chevy C-10), I have pulled the engine, then later had to pull the transmission. Honestly, If you have the shop space, I would pull the engine and transmission as a combination. Its much easier to get everything lined up and bolted together if you can move around the engine and transmission rather than trying to wedge yourself between the engine and firewall.
The otherside is, you will need to support the front of the transmission while its in the truck if you leave it. Your looking at a few more bolts and wiring connections.
