I just purchased a 2007 LE Frontier crew cab 4x4. I test drove it for a day and then decided to trade my gas hog Grand Cherokee! So far I love the truck it is averaging around 21 mpg. The day I bought it it I talked my wife into letting me purchase a Bully Dog Triple dog and a K&N performance intake it to maybe get me up to around 23 to 25 mpg. Is there anything that any Frontier owner should know? And does anyone have any experience with these two products? Also do all 4.0 liters have a little whine in the engine?

Thanks,
David

Congrats and welcome to Club Frontier.

As far as the two products go, I have no experience.

As for the engine whine you should be aware of a common problem with our trucks (vq40) second generations(05 through current) with v6. There has been known premature timing chain failure do to faulty chain tensioner, which will cause a pronounced whine or as some describe it "sounds like a turbo".

I would have your dealer check it out immediately. Not trying to scare you, and obviously I only know what you have described but, you can read up here if you enter timing chain in the search function at the top of the page.

Depends on what you mean by whine. I have noticed that all of them have what sounds like a loose vacuum hose, like it's leaking air. I figure if it's all of them (I made the dealer start 5 different trucks for me), then that's how they are. If it's a true whine then get it checked out.

It sounds to me like it is more of a vaccum leak or something . Its definitly not coming from where the timing chain is. Its not a bad whine just a noticable one. I going to try to find another one and see if does too!

They did replace the parts that were in the service bulletin under warranty. the truck had a 3,000 mile powertrain warranty at the time of my purchase with a 100 dollar deductible
