I have a frontier that I bought last October. I have about 4000 miles on it. I noticed that when I shift it from park to drive or park to reverse it sometimes makes a creaking noise. That's the best way I can describe it.

I also noticed if my truck is parked on a hill and I shift it, there is some resistance.

I'm just wondering if this is normal. Also, why it makes the noise.

Thanks in advance for your replies .

Are you using the parking brake? Especially on a hill you need to use it. Many people don't bother but it's better to always use it than not to.

To clarify what Clint means, hold the foot brake, apply the parking brake and then shift to park. This keeps park pawl in the trans happy.

I'm a 6-sp...and after I apply my parking brake the truck will roll a couple/few inches before coming to a full 'parking brake stop' once I remove my foot from the brake pedal. Does this happen with the auto trans as well?

People on occasion have to get a nudge from another vehicle just to get a loaded trans out of park. The parking pawl is not made to hold the weight of the truck.

Maybe it's just the stress on the metal parts, use the brake and it may all go away. Most likely nothing is wrong.

Place I used to live at had a steep driveway. It used to creak when the weight of the truck was put on the tranny alone. I did this to remedy the noise:
1. On the hill I would keep my foot on the brake and shift to neutral.
2. Apply parking brake then slowly let off the brake pedal.
3. Shift to park.
Never had an issue with noise or resistance again.

I have not been using the parking brake at all. I never really have with any of my vehicles. I will give that a try.

Thanks for the advice.
The only time I do not apply a parking brake is when I am on a level surface or the truck is wet from rain/slush and snow and I expect freezing temperatures.
Some state laws also require setting the brake and curbing tires when parked. Obviously enforcement only occurs should and if the truck becomes an unattended rollaway.

It's a parking brake but too many people refer to it as an emergency brake so they don't think it has to be used all the time.

Nois from park to drive

My driveway is on a slope and I have also experienced this and found that it seems to be the rear brakes holding. I have even noticed the truck actually not budging until I accelerate a bit. I don't believe this is a big issue just a small design flaw with the rear disc brake caliper.

I thought the noise sounded like it was coming from the brakes too. For me it happens even on flat ground but it's louder on a hill. It only happens right after I shift and release the brake pedal. I do live in a pretty humid area. My brake rotors rust up after one storm. After I run the truck for a little, it cleans up.

What is the connection?
