Hey everyone, new here, and I have a big prob. I have a new 2010 CC 4x4 V6
with just over 1200 miles with a very noticable engine knock at idle at all times. and seems to be getting louder. I also have the tapping at start-up, that quits as the oil press comes up. Went to dealer all they said was to keep a check on it and bring it back, if needed. I wish I had never seen it. I am so BUMMED!:sickly:
Any ideas?

what climate do you live in? are you letting the truck warm up a little bit before driving? and what type of gas are you using?

Hey Red,

Yeah, I've heard of this on the forum, actually a few times. I posted up a link to a thread that you might find useful. I don't have this issue, I have heard of it and think its related to cooler weather.

Try this link

Also, try the Search feature. I'd highly advise using the Google part of it, works much better. Hope this will get you more information.

Yes it is not right for a new anything!! I plan to tell the dealer to take the thing back. I am in for a fight I am sure, although I got letter from the GM hoping that I was pleased with my purchase etc... it is form letter of sorts but come Sat or Mon I plan to let him know how I feel. I hope I can get out of the deal somehow. Anyone gone through something like this?
MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

I have a good idea on what's going on with you engine noise. First, I have a couple of questions.

Did you change the truck over to Mobile 1 oil youself?

What oil filter did you use or what oil filter is currently on the truck?

Did the noise start AFTER the oil change? Not saying it's the cause, but most mfg's reccomend break in time before switching to synthetic. I wouldn't consider 750 miles long enough. I know I'll start something here, but I'm personally not a fan of synthetic oil unless it's required. I've used old fashioned dinosaur oil for years and never had an issue. I once had a Ranger however, that was switched to Mobil one at 20K and started using oil from that point on. Good luck - definitely not right in my book!

The noise was before the oil change, so I don't think it is the prob. I had it done at a NAPA center that I have used for years, and used a factory filter. I am willing to bet it is piston slap or may even be the timing chain I've seen so much about. But starting at under 1000k? I like it in many ways, but it just gripes me to no end, with that and some of its other quriks. I put the mobil one in as thats what I use & thought it might quite down some, but it didn't.

I'm glad I didn't jump into one of my quick assumptions. I've been on this forum for quite sometime, and you are the first to have such a problem rite out of the box. I have a feeling you have owned vehicles and know what you are talking about. It sucks when you spend big money and have engine issues. Do what you have to do to have peace of mind. I hope everything works out for the best.

Live in NE KY , Noise seems to centered and best heard inside
It sounds like a sticky lifter. Sometimes with the initial build there is debris left behind. No matter how hard you try sometimes it is there during the build process.

HOPEFULLY it is not a metal shaving that is hanging up one of the lifters. But, one thing you CAN do is go to AutoZone and buy 2 bottles of CD2 Oil Detergent.

I SWEAR by that stuff. It is one of VERY FEW additives of any kind I have ever used that actually works!

Put it in, if it is just a gummed up lifter (which it sounds like because it seems to free up after the engine gets warm) that stuff WILL fix the problem.

Then change the oil after about 300 - 500 miles of putting the CD2 in. Put one more bottle of CD2 in the second time and then change the oil at its normal interval.

I have seen that stuff work nothing short of a miracle on an old Chevy with 180,000 miles that had not had the oil changed in at least 50,000 miles. The stuff looked like black MUD! That motor had a rattle so bad that I thought it was going to throw a rod and crack the block. It was that bad! Used CD2, changed the oil, used it again, changed the oil and that baby ran nice after that.

If you ever get a sticky lifter that stuff really truly works!

You can also use Lucas oil stabilizer. It really does work

Almost forgot, I changed my oil a while back to synthetic also and AFTERWARD started to get a little bit of a knock. It was definitely a sticky lifter (I've worked on cars a few years). Don't know why the synthetic knocked some crud loose but it did.

I went to AutoZone, bought the CD2 and put it in my own truck. Within a few minutes the knock was gone. I still had it a LITTLE whenever I would start the motor cold for a couple weeks but it slowly went away. Now it seems as though it is gone for good.

Don't know, maybe the changeover to synthetic breaks some varnish loose, or causes some stickiness with the existing oil. All I know is that after the lifter was totally freed I would never go back to regular oil. I'm stuck on synthetic and love it.

I thought about an additive, but figured the dealer would have a cow
Put the oil detergent in (CD2) if you don't tell the dealer they will never know. Also, because it is oil detergent, it is actually included in NORMAL motor oil anyway. It's just that the CD2 contains a pretty concentrated amount of it. It breaks up any sludge, varnish, etc. It DEFINITELY frees up sticky lifters. And there is no way that an oild detergent is going to affect a warranty any more than an injector cleaner fluid in the tank.

Over the years I've tried nearly every kind of additive there is and this one works. And I mean really, really works. I've used it for almost 20 years now and swear by the stuff.

As for Lucas, I've used their injector cleaner and tend to like it. More because of the upper cylinder lubricant that it contains and not because of any results I might get.
