OK. I admit, I haven't driven a 4 cyl in over 20 years. My brand new 2016 Frontier has a slight ping, or maybe tick is a better word(hard to describe) when accelerating. It's slight, but I do hear it and don't know if this is just a normal 4 cyl engine sound accelerating...or something I should have checked out. I don't hear it when parked and give it some gas...at first I thought it might be the sound of a slight exhaust leak.

My 4 cyl doesn't have anything except a smooth revving sound under full acceleration. The intake and exhaust are so quiet it's purely engine noise.

There is a minor ticking sometimes at idle, which very well may be one of the accessories.

Can you try a video and see if the specific sound is audible in the recording?

went to dealer, they said normal engine sound. Tech did mention a slight ping sound(like bad gas) but again thought was normal under load when accelerating. I'm still not convinced but truck is brand new so I have 3 years to monitor..lol

You could run your tank to the light and try a few gallons of 91. Best case, you have spent a few dollars extra and it doesn't change anything. Worst case you might find it improves the pinging.
