this is actually a hardbody ?? i found what i thought was a small leak coming from under my 4 cylinder hardbody , its a 96 w/only 58k 5 speed , i thought it was the rear seal upon inspecting it , its not a rear seal ... ill try to explain what it is i can see it looks like some type of rubber boot from the shifter (looking under the vehicle) to the top of the transmission attached with a black zip tie from the factory well there is a rip in the boot , would the oil dripping out be brake fluid from the slave cylinder or just hot grease melting?? , its real clear and fells like brake fluid , and it does not leak bad just enough to drive me nuts,thanks Raceline.

Just an idea, but can you disassemble the shifter and boot from the inside to have a peek at this other boot? I use to have the same truck, but forget now.

sound like the shifter boot is torn. just order order one from the dealer and replace. if oil is coming outta the boot, then its gear oil.

I had a '97 HB with the same issue. That boot fits over the shifter and will eventually crack and leak. Not sure why your fluid appears to be so thin, but it's gear oil that leaks there. Order a new top gasket and boot and you should be good to go.

x3 on the last post. Mine never tore but did leak from there. That shifter boot is the only thing keeping it from leaking out the top and it does happen.

i get a heavy gear oil smell sometimes while driving. I have removed the center console down to the open shifter boot on top of my 5 spd, but see no leakage. there is also no leakage under my truck...

check the vent line, see if oil is coming outta there.
