I would have searched for this, but I have no idea what to search for about it.

I had to change my tire today (front driver's side), and after taking off the old one, 5 broken bolts were resting in the rim. I looked, and there were 5 broken bolts, and a 6th not broken one around the rotor in between the lug bolts.

What on earth are they??

How dangerous is it to drive with only 1/6 of those bolts?

How pricey, how difficult and what needs to be replaced to fix this?

Those are the bolts that hold the rotor to the hub, I would think the rotor could go to far with the caliper holding it but dont take my word for it, could end upo being very dangerous. You have to take the hub off the spindle then knock the rotor and hub apart, get the broken bolts out and replace them, reassemble.

I would not drive on that. You need to get them replaced before you drive anywhere. The reason they came out is because they were tightened down to far, this happens a lot if you use pneumatic tools that don't have torque settings.

I got my last brake job right after Ike hit in Autumn of 08. My first guess was that I'd occasionally take speed bumps hard, and we have some ugly roads around here, but wouldn't that have damaged the lugs as well?

I remember how hard it was to break loose my hub/rotor bolts. wasnt very fun at all. They torque at 70-100 ft lbs... I dont see how they would have broke off unless an air tool was used.... even then the heads of the bolts woulnt be just down in the bottom of the wheel... strange.
