So there is a huge rust hole in my muffler (see picture) and I would like to replace it with something that has a deeper and slightly louder sound without drone. While there I'm also interested in replacing the y pipe. I have been reading a lot on here but it has given me a lot more questions than answers. I would like to get some suggestions for both. Thanks for the help!

You might get a lot of opinions on this.

I've been very happy with the Gibson cat back exhaust. Eliminates Y-pipe. Just enough to sound like a truck, but without the drone, etc.

how rusted is the rest of your piping? It may be better off to replace the whole thing while you're in there...

But to your question... Magnaflow sells a true Y pipe. but you'll need someone that can weld to put it in... there's not alot of pipe on either side of it. For the muffler... that's going to be a crap-shoot. One of the reasons alot of guys go for a full cat-back is simplicity. Personally, I've heard the AFE exhaust before & after Chaos put resonators on it. it sounded a bit raspy before, and no rasp after, just a rumble. And if you select a muffler and you don't like the sound and need to add resonators, you will Really need to have solid piping F --> R.

So first I'd get a solid assessment of the condition of your pipes...

Not my picture but essentially just like this:

The problem with a cat back is I just don't have the money to spend on it nor the will on an 11 year old truck. I'm going to have the work done at a shop so will new pipes be necessary anyway for them to weld and work on or can they use the current pipes considering their condition?

If its just surface rust throughout like in the picture then they should be able to just clean & weld. You can get an idea by taking an icepick/screwdriver/pointy thing and probe with some force at areas along the pipe. If it feels solid, you're probably ok, if there's soft spots (or you go through) then you need new pipe...
Have you asked a muffler shop for an estimate? They may have some generic "turbo" mufflers or "cherry bombs" laying around they might give you a break on...

this post here shows pics of a Gibson beside a stock system. here's a pic of the stock Y and a magnaflow Y.

The exhaust shop may even have some Y pipes laying around...

I used one of the magnaflow "Y"s. But if I was to do it again I would use a 2 in single out muffler to get rid of the Y. Go to your local muffler shop. Ask the guy to recommend you something. He will cut out the old muffler, bend some pipe and weld everything back up. The price should be very reasonable.

I got a full 2.5 stainless cat back from a muffler shop welded up for about 200, in under a day, I just had to supply the muffler.. I went with a flowmaster 70 series and I'm very happy with the exhaust system

I swapped out the stock on my 2006 with a flowmaster F50, and got rid of the Y pipe all together and went true 2 into 1

I am VERY happy with the results... I get complimented on the sound all the time. Its throaty without being obnoxious. and it doesnt hum at all at freeway speeds.
