My timing chain tensioner is apparently is the cause of a light whining noise from my engine. Truck='05 2WD 4.0 V6 Frontier 75k

Do I really need to get this fixed and why.
If it is just a noise than I don't want to pay $1500 to get it fixed unless it gets worse.

In a few weeks I will be driving cross country, so naturally I want the truck in good shape to get me and my tools there and back.

I have read several forums on the subject but all anyone talks about is fixing the noise, rather than the problem that the noise indicates.

Could anyone offer some insight on the situation.:comphead:
Thanks

If your driving cross country, then I would spend the money and get it replaced. Last week I talked to a guy who broke down and he ended up having his truck towed to a local dealership and spend 4 days waiting for it to get fixed. If you add up the tow, getting it fixed, motel, food and just the inconvenience of being somewhere you don't want to be, I'd say it wasn't worth it. But you could be okay and not have any problems. I just like the peace of mind and not have to worry about it.

Good luck with your decision.

The noise is actually the metal to metal contact of the plunger (thats suppose to be covered by the guide shoe) and the timing chain. If it goes on too long you can have total timing chain/engine failure. If it is truly the guide shoes making noise, you need to change them before you go on the trip. Sorry guy.

thanks for the feedback, after contemplating my sense of adventure i have decided to bite the bullet and get it fixed.
rdrfronty - thanks for the straight answer, all the mechanics i have spoken to are really vague about the problem.
