The new guy here again. My avg mpg from the computer is showing 18.1 city with an egg foot. My actual mpg computing it the old way,( Simple division, miles traveled and gallons used ), is 13.5. I have 628 miles so far and I know it may be too soon to correlate the two methods but the disparity is quite large. Any thoughts on this before I take it to the stealership and ask them to reset the puter?

Calculating it yourself gives you the actual exact mileage. If it's that low, you should take it in because there might be wrong with the truck beyond the MPG gauge. Are you sure you're dividing the miles traveled by the gallons filled?

the gauge is way off but your calculations seem about right for a brand new truck in the city. the truck will not run at peak efficiency when its brand new. the best mpg wont' be seen till after some break in time has passed. if pretty much all your driving is city then dont' expect to see much over 14 though depending on how much stop and go and how hilly it is. also with the gears that the pro-4x models have don't expect to see as good of highway mileage as some guys see with their v6. a decent mix of city and highway should net you 17 ish depending. also air temps and elevation above sea level will make a difference too. most people run 87 in these trucks with no problem and your manual will note that as the min octane for fuel but the manuals in like the 05-07 or 08 state that 91 is optimum for these motors. some people running 87 have had some minor pinging/knock in some climates and were instructed by the dealer to up the octane because if the computer sees knocking it will pull timing and add fuel to prevent it netting you less power and lower economy. so if thats pretty much city only i'd say give it some time and keep track of the economy doing your own math and see if the computer starts getting closer to the calculations your getting if not take it in and mention it and if your continuing to net 13 mpg after some time take it in or step up to 89 or something if your running 87. the dealer is pretty much going to plug it in and say nothing is wrong or say to give it time or something along those lines if you take it in right now

colin123, I agree with you on all points. I'm only at 628mi and it's been about 50-50 highway and city. I'm in Phoenix, Arizona and the temps are 113 and elevation is 1500 city. The north country is 6 to 7 thousand feet and about 90 degrees plus some mountain climbs. I just compared the computer read out of mpg as opposed to the real math calculations and the spread is close to 5 miles per gallon. I would think it should be closer than that.

I will wait till there is 1000mi on the truck before I talk to the stealership and document everything in the meantime.

Thanks for all the replies.

did you reset the computer when you FILLED up 628 miles ago? Or is 628 miles the total miles on the truck? Maybe it didn't have a full tank when you bought it? Try resetting the computer (hold the button in a few seconds until it resets) and the trip odometer at the same time you fill the tank. Drive 2 or 3 tank fulls of fuel and then compare it.

yeah if you pay for gas with a card i'd keep the slips and write the miles per tank from the odometer on them so you can be like "heres the real numbers and real math so i don't know what fuel flow rates that trip computer is reading but they are a bit off" lol. i'm not sure if they can calibrate it or not to be honest though. i can calibrate it on my bully dog gt. i took what it was telling me i was getting for economy for a set time com paired to what i was actually getting and it lets you adjust for the percentage difference that its off and now she's pretty close to bang on. maybe they can do the same

I have a 2010 SE V6 CC 4x4 bought in january.
I don't have the trip computer, but have calculated the old way for a number of tanks. I'm now at 4000 miles and I've seen from a low of 14.5 very early on to a high of 20.8 for all highway at 75mph. That was a trip from Austin to Baton Rouge, so very low elevations there.
Normal is 16.5 for me.

This is the MPG you should be getting as a CC 4x4 v6. 19-20 on 100% highway, and 12-13 on 100% city. Realistically, you'll get 16-17.

Being your truck is new (probably don't even have first oil change), 13-14 MPG in city is normal. After 10k miles, you'll get 1 MPG higher, and then at 20k, another +1 (roughly). So if your truck wasn't brand new, you' get about 15 MPG in your situation (I know this from experience).

Just give it time to break-in I'm getting between 18-19 mpg per tank mostly city and ethynol free. What I do notice is when I fill it up, my mpg reads 20 plus then after I get below half a tank it drops to about 18. I still do the math, and my last fill up netted me 19.4 mpg. So relax it'll get better. Running your AC which I presume you do cause you live in Arizona and any ethynol will also give you a few less mpgs.

There is no way a frontier gets 19 MPG city with my definition of what city is (not even a 4 banger)... in fact, it has difficulty getting 19 on 100% highway. I think you are looking at your gauge, which is obviously wrong.

My truck gets 18mpg on the highway at 55mph. At 65mph is around 16mpg. But thats due to the lift and wheels. Stock I can get 18mpg at 65mph easy. And thats with 65K miles on the truck.

EDIT: I dont have the gage. I have to do the math my self.

and what is your definition of city?

BTW....didn't your momma ever teach you that the delivery of the message is just as important as the message itself? Why does every post you make on this forum make you look like an arrogant butthole?

City driving = stop and go frequently.

My posts are not arrogant, but blunt. A frontier does not get 19 MPG in city driving. .

Your post is rude.

Again, wrong. I consistently get 20-21mpg all city on my 4banger. Its all in watching RPMs. And I calculate it myself (don't even have the mpg gauge anyway).

Well according to my definition of city, its possible. If I drive like a nut, which is what I usually do, I get about 17-18. If I'm light on the gas, I'll get about 19, maybe 20. Thats here in Lubbock where we have no hills and I get on the freeway maybe once a week for about 2 miles, everything else is surface streets.

19 on 100% highway IS what I get when I keep it between 75 and 80. If I slow down to 70 I get 21-22, depending mostly on wind conditions.

I'm at about 40,000 miles on the odometer with 265/75/16 tires.

As far as the OP goes, I think I wouldn't worry about it till after your first oil change. It still needs to be broken in, and even if your milage doesn't improve, you've still got a lot of warranty left to get it taken care of.
