I just got a Magellan 1412 for Christmas. I was wondering if I should be so bold as to modify the factory navigation dock to make it fit the Magellan, or if I should swap it for a Garmin piece. I saw a bunch of threads on it, but none that actually modify the housing. Also, is there a way to hardwire it to the truck? I would much rather use a hardline instead of utilizing one of my 12volt outlets.

Not sure about the factory navigation dock modification, but you can most definitely hard wire the power for the unit. Radio shack and truck stops sell a lighter socket adapter (female) that you can plug your power plug into that has bare wires you can hard wire into the truck. Make sure you use a switched 12v source (on/off with ignition) so the unit turns off with the key.

If you don't want to deal with finding/buying this plug, you can cut the plug off of your GPS power cord... just make sure you get the polarity right. Don't hook it up backwards.

You can wire it into the back of the lower outlet (unswitched), which means you will have to manually turn it off every time. Or wire it to the back of the upper outlet and it will only be on when the ignition is on.

The lower outlet fuse is in the fuse block under the hood (20 AMP) and the upper outlet fuse in in the fuse box inside the cabin on the right side (15 AMP).

I have the Magellan RoadMate 1412 and I mounted mine on top of the stereo area (where the Garmin mount is on yours) and drilled a hole in the plate and ran the power cord down through the stereo area, with the plug coming out at the bottom and going into the top outlet.

If you do hard wire it, you should get another power cord with a plug on the end in case you want to remove the Magellan from that vehicle and use it in another vehicle.

thanks for the input. I decided to use the factory mounting gear that came with the unit, and put the adhesive sticky pad on the tray in front of the gear box. if i decide to hardwire it later, i can do so by going through the back of the console. its out of the way which was my most important criteria. ill post pics soon
