So I bought my Nissan frontier on kind of an impulse. The previous owner said it had been sitting for over a year only being driven on occasion. I could not pass up the price and the truck drove smoothly on city streets and looks nice inside and out. I took it on the freeway after I bought it and was thinking huh, this 3.3l motor is definitely less powerful than my previous Dodge ram 1500 with a 5.9l v8 in it. As I have been driving I have been noticing that if you floor it nothing really happens and I have been having to wait a good 3 or 4 seconds before the revs calm down to be able to shift smoothly. So it begins. The search for power and smooth shifting. (as usual.)

First. I cleaned my MAF sensor and TPS with MAF sensor cleaner. I need to re adjust the TPS because the idle is off and the check engine light came on afterward with the low voltage code for it. (stupid breaking things while trying to fix problems.) If the adjustment/ relearning process doesn't shut off the light I will order a new one.

I am also getting a knock sensor low voltage at times as well as a high voltage at other times. I plan to relocate the KS as soon as I have an extra 40-50 bucks laying around.

I did buy a fuel filter and will be replacing that tonight assuming that I do not crash out as soon as I get home again. I also plan to attempt the relearn process tonight.

I believe there is an vacuum leak as well. The MAF shows that it is reading at least 5.9 grams per second at idle when it should be 3.3* comparable to the liters in the motor. I will have to check the EVAP system for a leak because I sprayed all of the hoses in the engine bay with carb cleaner and had no rev ups.

I am looking for any advice or previous experience with these issues.
Any input would be appreciated. :serious:

Of course I walk out to the truck today during my break and find a puddle the size of my fist on the ground. Power steering fluid. Fun. I am assuming it is the pressure hose because it is practically squirting out of the hose. I will have to do some research though.

I would try using the scan tool you used to check your MAF flow to check your throttle, just slowly press the pedal from 0% to 100% to watch that it rises steady without stopping or skipping %.. you can also check by back probing with a volt meter and you can get the values from the service manual.

From what you described with having to play with the throttle to get the trans to shift, it sounds like you have an automatic trans and it may be slipping, how's your trans fluid?

I should have mentioned. It is a manual transmission. I really should just flush the fluid, that is a good point though. I will make sure that is is at an acceptable level. I am not having to play with the throttle the rpms are just not dropping fast enough after taking my foot off of the pedal and if you shift as fast as you would like to it causes grinding.

Before I got the truck the plugs, wires and at least the distributor cap were replaced. I have not taken off the cap to inspect the rotor. I will make sure to look up those forums and see if that is something I should do.

Sorry I did not post an update. I did change the fuel filter. This did help a little with the power issue. The old filter was definitely not helping anything. I did notice that there was positive pressure in the crank case and I changed the PCV valve, this caused the MAF pressure reading to drop but not to where it should be. I am ordering a new power steering hose as well as a new TPS because the re-learn process didn't get rid of the CEL, I know the F/A mix is off because if I try to go full throttle to get into traffic it bogs down before picking up speed even if you try to launch with rpms held at 3k.
