I bought my truck (99 v6 4x4) about 6 months ago and I've wanted to cut these things off with a sawzall since day one. How much do they actually help the leaf spring, and are they even necessary? i don't want to cut them off if they're important, I just haven't seen them on many trucks

The front leaf spring bracket looks badly rusted. It sounds like you want to take a sawzall to the bottom rusted portion of the bracket to smooth it out? If you go that route I would treat the rest with POR15 to stop the rust.

If it were my truck i would take it to a welding shop and see if they can cut out the rusted portion and weld up new support for it, unless you can do it yourself. It looks like it's going to have to be cut out either way.

Thanks for the response, I'd rather just smooth it out, but if rot makes it dangerous to load up heavy loads then i'll definitely replace them. Wonder if I can buy a pair online

My guess is it's a dealer only part that needs to be welded on, no bolts there and it's going to be expensive. I'm betting the brackets are at least 200 per side if they still make them

Frame parts for a 99: 1999 Nissan Frontier Frame - NissanPartsDeal.com

You'll have to select the correct diagram for your exact model.

The part in question was about 75.00 for each side of my 01, but they are all limited availability. And it does look like they need to be welded on as well, so if yours are threatening to "let go" of the spring, it might be better/faster/cheaper to go to a local welder and ask them to fab something.

Thanks for the link! The leaf springs seem to still be very sturdy. There is no rot around the part of the bracket where the spring is bolted on, it's more towards the front of the bracket. I loaded it up a couple months back with at least 500-600 pounds of scrap and it did fine. I do want to replace them though, they're downright ugly to look at lol

Yeah replace them or trash the truck.

I suspect there is a very good reason they come from the factory the way they do. I think yours are a disaster waiting to happen and I doubt the truck would pass any kind of safety check.

You might lose it one day and kill someone.
