Got a Dual HU from crutchfield and installed it today. their wiring kit is really nice, almost plug and play.

i have a problem though. when i plug my iphone in, it doesn't charge, and when i switch to usb mode, it just says "reading" and the iphone keeps saying its connecting and disconnecting. Anyone know what's up with this?

Some HUs only accept flash drives via USB because of power requirements. Also, your iphone must be set as "mass storage on usb connection."

In order to charge your iphone, you need a powerful USB port and generally HUs have weak ports designed for flash drives. USB charging is MUCH slower than outlet due to very only 500m limitation of 1 USB port.

I do not recommend using the aux jack for playing stuff off your phone. It will use the phone's internal amplifier (leading to crappy sound quality), but the USB port will bypass it by treating your phone as a storage device to read from (instead of your phone feeding the HU with sound).

I would just give crutchfield a call since you bought there head unit from them. There customer service is GREAT. It could be anything from a defective head unit to a faulty cord for your iphone

From reading reviews I have found that most HUs have a hard time reading Ipod products. The unit I have listed below, would not read my Touch, but does just excellent with 2nd gen. nano.
Perhaps if there isnt anything wrong with the HU, you could go down a generation and a step down in ipod ... worked for me. Lots on Fleebay.. for a song.

you do know that USB is a standard and that ALL USB ports provide +5v and can provide up to 500Ma's of power(if your lucky enough to have USB3.0 then that does jack it up to 900Ma's but i havent seen any pcs with it myself). there is no such thing as a high powered or low powered USB port. you can easily charge an iplop with USB since people do it EVERYDAY. check the iplops wallwart and you will see it only puts out +5v at 500Ma's.

now, you are correct in saying that some decks can only see flash drives via USB. in which case , as you said, you have to switch the iplop over to a "mass storage device"

A USB connection will charge slower because there is less power from the source (HU) compared to a wall or cigarette plug (with usb adapter). Most car stereos have a very low Mah coming from their USB port (though the cable can handle the standard of 500) and are designed to work power flash drives or already powered devices (phones or ipods).

For example, if you try 2.5" hard drive on your USB port, it will not get enough power from the HU to run correctly. Likewise, you can take the same hard drive and plug it into your computer with the same USB and it will run just fine.

A work around exists for this: Get a USB splitter that is plugged into a USB adapter in the cigarette plug, the device, and the HU.

5v is 5v weather its coming from a 12v main source or a 120v main source. i have run a portable HDD several times in other cars for music without an issue. not sure why you have had problems. the portable HDDs were designed for USB's 5v and 500Ma's. if yours was having problems then it was your radio having an issues not every radio having an issue. again USB is an industry standard its not something you can just tweek with. NOW, if the radios USB is 1.1 then its a different story. that USB cant provide 500Ma's and will create longer charge times for USB powered items. also the 500Ma's is the MAX output the device that is hooked up will determine how many Ma's are actually used.

I have a Dual7714 installed about 5 months ago and I'm pretty happy so far. I did have a problem with the unit after the install with the radio not reading a usb stick I tried a bunch formatted different ways with sizes ranging from 512-4gb and it would just keep getting the osd "reading". My Iphone was able to charge and the radio can play my music with tags without issue. Before I called Crutchfield I made a CD of MP3's loaded it and it read the disc no problems I then tried the USB stick and it worked!

since then I had one crash with the usb and had to do a reset of the system.

good luck

my radio has a separate source for the Ipod and USB. I'm not sure if your just having trouble with the phone part

Using many devices with lots of ipods and my ex iphone, etc... when plugged into a weak USB hosting device, the iphone heats up quite a bit even though it says it is charging it runs dead while plugged in but doesn't cease to communicate with the device/computer. The iphone/ipod touch use a slightly different communication language interface than the classic and nano ipods do, the hosting product must have software support for them to function correctly.

Sounds like a problem with the HU actually being able to recognize your hardware, not voltage. Those HUs are basically a type of computer, and just like plugging in your cell phone to a PC, if it doesn't have the software/coding to recognize that device, it will not do anything with it. A lot of cell phones will not charge by simply plugging into computers, even though there is a power source, until you install the drivers/software for that hardware. If your HU doesn't say that it supports that device, then I have two recommendations: 1) buy a charger that plugs in to a DC port in the vehicle. 2) call the manufacturer and see if there is a way to flash the firmware via the usb and a flash drive to support that hardware. I don't know that you can do the second option, but didn't want to rule out all possibilities.

just a side note, if you still have factory speakers in the rear door panels (extended cab) seriously consider changing them out. My factory speakers blew at half max volume, upon taking them out, Nissan had installed 2 ohm speakers on a 4 ohm circuit (most radios put 4 ohms to each channel). If you're going to spend the money on a new HU, go ahead while you are at it and get some worth while speakers. Surprisingly enough my front door speakers are holding up well... not the same sound quality, but still working currently
