I just scored my dream job, but it's 29 miles from house. And gas and tolls will come into play versus annual salary. What is the best way to save some real MPGs. I have a 4 door 4.0 auto. Stock except for K&N drop in . Is there a programmer that would help me? I would get a CAI but do not think they really matter that much, and my last truck got worse milage after an exaust. Please lend me your best tips if you would. I am all ears...

sell your truck if you are that worried about it. nothing you can buy will yeild a difference. driving patterns and habits are too inconsistant to get a monetary return in the form of mpg from a tune or intake.

Synthetic oil gave me the most boost in MPG. It's a touchy subject since there is a whole thread about it and most people don't believe in it but mine went from 19 at best to 24 still driving like a madman. It is amazing what a light foot and slow starts does also. You really notice it when you drive a car where it's in your face. I drove a V8 Dodge as a rental and it got 13 when I drove it like my truck but 25 when I was easy with it.

You've already done the K&N but as someone else suggested, change the intake altogether. The easier it is for the truck to get the air yet still being properly filtered the better things will be.

So bottom line ether leave 30 minutes early or buy a Civic. I can't imagine driving a 4x4 4 door, I was depressed with my 2 door 2wd when I first bought it.

Thanks for the posts guys, I didn't really expect any miracles, just figured I would ask. I will just lighten up the lead foot a bit, haha. No it's not that far and the job is totally worth it. Does the stock airbox mod (cutting the holes) make any differnece except for sound?

You got what you got, it's a truck as everyone has said.
A light accelerator foot, using less brakes and keeping the truck in top shape helps.

- keep the air filter clean
- maintain proper tire pressures
- don't use crappy gas buy good stuff
- if you drive highway miles a bed cover may help

Between my Volant, Flowmaster and Superchips I'm roughly up a 1.5 MPG increase.
Other than those things not much more you can do to increase mileage, good luck!

I'm no truck expert by far but I agree with everyone else. Drive slower, dont stomp on the gas when the light goes green, use the cruise control and keep up with the tires, oil, and air filter. Now people feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I saw a thread the other day, sometime last week about the Bullydog tuner and 2 others, cant remember the names. A couple people said the Bullydog gave them better gas milage and it has the driving coach that improved it a bit more. I dont want to praise the tuner too much because I dont remember all that I read in the thread but I do know its on my wish list now.

The only problem is that you don't want to end up dumping more money into than you were going have to anyway, like for maintenance. Tuners are what like $400? If they only are going to give you 2 MPG more thats a waste.

Think though, most people that buy tuners are NOT looking for MPG increases, instead they are looking for performance increases.
If a few extra MPGs come your way, that's just the icing on the cake so to speak.
But agreed, don't buy a tuner expecting a miracle increase to your gas mileage.

Yeah thats very true and I agree that your not going to buy a tuner because its going to give you a huge mpg increase... But why not have the extra power and a few extra mpgs while your at it. I doubt that anyone is going to say they will never mod there truck anymore than they have. Yeah they are pricey but the Bullydog is the most expensive for a reason, that reason being quality. And as I stated before it comes with the driving coach which would also help you save some dough in the long run by not only saving gas but also some ware and tare on the truck. Thats just my thinking anywho :)
