So I finally got my aftermarket tranny cooler... It was smaller than I thought it would be for the GVW rating of 24,000.

It's a Tru-Cool LPD4589. (low pressure drop)
The LPD made me feel better about living in a climate with cold *** winters.

I haven't installed it yet, but I did notice something I'd like some opinions on... The instruction manual assumes there is a radiator cooler in series with this cooler. Well clearly, I've bypassed mine thus my purchase of a better aftermarket one.

Do you all think it's going to cool enough for my needs? I was really thrown off by how much smaller it is, it's an inch or two smaller than the OEM one.

I still may add a fan. My rationalization is this for now:

From what I hear, separating the tranny's cooling system from the radiator usually in itself LOWERS the avg temp of the transmission fluid because the coolant will actually warm the transmission fluid.

When I install this thing, I'm going to put a gauge in at the same time to see what kind of temps I'm working with. Then I can always decide to put a fan in.

I know it can be a pain in the *** to find switched power though... and fans really don't do much other than when you're stopped.

I do believe the stacked plate design (my aftermarket) is more efficient, so I suppose that accounts for the size difference.

Why replace the OEM unit? Why not just add an electric pusher fan and a trans temp gauge. Set the fan to come on when the gauge reaches a certain temp and off when it drops down enough.
