2008 Frontier 4.0L Manual

I was giving my truck a routine look over when I spotted this...

There is evidence that someone has worked on this steering linkage prior to me owning it. The first picture just gives an overall perspective of what I'm looking at and the second shows what I'm actually concerned with.

You can see in the second photo that a rod (which is connected to the steering wheel) goes into the collar of the bellows looking part (which is metal it's not a rubber boot even though it looks like one). Notice there is a small hole that looks like it is made for a pin of some sort. The rod does not go past the hole (so it's basically in the collar just a few millimeters). My question is what the heck is holding in that rod?!! There's no pin, no weld, nothing. Is corrosion the only thing keeping me from losing my steering while driving down the road?

Can someone take a look at their frontier and verify what this section of steering linkage is supposed to look like? Thanks you!

I was able to get a little better of a picture...sorry it is rotated differently than the others but you get the idea

It was hard to get calipers down there but I did manage to do it and measured that the rod is only about 0.1" (2.5mm) inside of the collar...something about it just doesn't seem right but I don't have anything to compare it to.

I only just came across this since I don't normally look in the DIY section but I'll take a look at mine. Does your truck have a body lift?

I can't offer any technical advice but I snapped a few pics of mine for you. I know mine has not been altered, owned it since new.

Sorry I didn't see this sooner as well.
