Shift in or out of 4 wheel when your driving? of course shift into N first then pop it in? or do you have to be stopped and in N? dumb question i know but we have some snow roads then a mile down its bare with a little bit of water and kinda frozen and i didnt know if it was too hard on the front end.

thanks all!

i think the manual says you can "shift on the fly" into 4hi up to 35 mph, but double check that.

with that said, i have never shifted into 4hi above just a idle roll (i have to get out and lock the hubs anyways, so no reason for me to be rolling when i shift). for 4lo, the truck must be stopped and in neutral to shift.

There is a how-to in my signature (How to work you 4x4). Yes you can shift into 4 HI with auto hubs up to 45 mph (i've done it and it's a smooth as silk). However, you need to set your auto hubs first and the how to explains all that.

Our manual says you can shift into 4hi going 25 or less, and you can shift back to 2 at any speed.. if you can I would shift at the lowest speed you can just to be easier on your truck.

mmm, I tried 45 mph on the interstate, my truck nearly shat a brick.

I could have sworn doing it before though, but I also had to change my rotors which required me to disassemble a bit of the hubs, but it still shifts in 4hi at low speeds.

You needed 4wd on the interstate? I would be worried to switch to it going anything above 20 but that's just me.

I think it's 25mph that you can pop it into 4wd. I 've had to shift into 4wd a couple of times navigating muddy roads going to vacant real estate lots. It's always been smooth and very useful. Fastest I've done it is probably 15-20 though.

I know i've shifted back to 2wd at highway speed... I usually put it in 4hi at a stop or going slower... Never shift into 4wd hi while any wheel is spinning!!!!

When going to the mountain snowboarding, I shift on the fly lots. 4wd hi only!
I always stop on the side of the road and do the initial 4wd to lock the hubs though.. I have never tried to slap it into 4wd with first locking the hubs at a stop. I have shifted in and out of 4wd at speeds up to 45 with out so much as a click. Works just fine! I keep the hubs locked and only use 4wd when passing or if there is lots of snow..

That is not quite 100% true.

Nissan is stating that you can move your shifter to 4HI from 2HI to engage the auto Hubs. But this will make them clatter until they are engaged and this wears them out. It's better to stop first and then engage them.

If you read your manual a bit more it will say that "Leaving the hubs locked while driving in 2H may be desirable so that you can easily shift to 4H at speeds greater than 25MPH." The key word being shift "to" 4HI.

I'm not advocating that you do this I am stating that a good running 4x4 system will work properly as a push button 4x4 system as long as you have engaged the hubs first.
