Every now and then, you will go to start my truck (05 Nissan Frontier). It will just turn over and not crank up. The security key light comes on. Also when the truck is running you can take the key out of the ignition. What is y'all's opinions on the problem. %50 say it's the ignition 50% say it's the key. I was curious to see what I should do about fixing this but at the same time am
Only 19 and in college and don't want to go to the dealership so they can rape me on the price. If it's the ignition how would the door locks then work with the new key?

I'd think it's an easy change for you or anyone you know who is comfortable with simple hand tools. The door locks would need to be re keyed or youll use a separate door key.
My vote is ignition is worn out and creation poor electrical connections which is why I never have any other keys on the ring to add weight.

I see ignitions for like 180 dollars that come with 2 keys, but how would I get the door locks to match up? What do you mean rekey them. Who would do that and what would be the cost?

You'd need a locksmith to rekey anything and all locks would need to be removed too. One thing I'm wondering about is if the truck would need to be programmed to the new key and lock, you'd have to inquire about that with a Nissan tech. Go to a dealer and ask one outside for the answer skip the service writer as he's only there to upsell all he can. Good luck.

What kind of shape is your key in? If the key itself is worn quite a bit, there is a very small chance having a new key cut off the key code and not off the old one would work, but I agree with Clint, it's probably the cylinder just worn out.

I would talk to a locksmith as well as the dealer to see what your options and prices are.

Fresh chip key on one of our commercial trucks was $125 & the locksmith had it done in a half hour or so. I don't think locksmith pricing is regulated in any way, so this price could change drastically if you're in a rural area or if the Smith is a price gouger
