Ok so here is the rub. When i turn on the AC you could hear the compressor come on and it blows cold air for a couple of seconds then you could hear the compressor turn off and the air turns hot. When I got the truck it blew only hot air so i took it to add freon at a shop. It worked for one day than the hot air came back, so I took it back to the shop and they informed me that it was electrical and that it was a relay. I purchased the relay and nothing still only hot air. I then took it to another AC person who said it was the pressure swith not getting ground, he did a temporary fix until i purchase the switch. Now the AC does blow cold air (real cold) but goes out every now and then. A mechanic told me that it could also be the blower motor. I also keep reading about the thermo amplifier going out on our trucks. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sorry about the long post but I am trying to be as informative as I can.

I'm no A/C expert at all, so take this with a grain of salt..... If the compressor comes on once, blows cold, then shuts off and doesn't come back on, then blows hot....it's definitely electrical. If the A/C continuously cycles on and off and won't get cold, THEN it's a freon issue. As for the mechanic that told you it could be a blower motor.... does the a/c cycle regularly? are your vents blowing air? my guess is that if the vents are blowing air, the blower motor is working (unless there is a seperate blower for cold air? that would be stupid) you could then look to the appropriate vent door motors for routing cold air into the cabin. But, back to the point....if it's cycling a lot (3-4+ times per minute), check freon...if it's cycling regularly and blowing air(slower than before-mentioned) check vent doors....if not blowing at all, check blower motor. Now, again, I have no in-depth a/c experience, but this seems right to me having 10 or so years experience working on cars recreationally. Good luck!

go to pdftown.com and find your manual or one close to your year. read it and get a direction to go in. i read mine and there is a lot to check if you want to be thorough as well as explanations and diagrams on the system..... there are high and low pressure sides.....might have an issue there......certainly sounds electrical though.....maybe you compressor is inefficient and over amping/overheating and causing it to cycle off....

I highly doubt all of the above was necessary.

The first gen has a little known issue called a thermal resistor/amplifier. It sits behind the glove box inside a large black box where the condenser is. It measures how cold it is. If the resistor measures that it is too cold it turns off the compressor.

Well the resistor goes bad (on ever truck) and needs to be replaced. This is the first step you should get replaced if you have never done this on the 1st gen. They start to fail around 40,000 miles.

From the sounds of your issues this is your problem. I would double check the grounding issue (override). This is not the proper way to fix anything. You could fry something.

Basically what the mechanics are seeing is that the compressor is just turning off for no reason. Mechanic one should have not charged you for freon a simple test should have proven that your pressure was good (unless it was actually low).

Most mechanics (even dealers) do not know about this problem. Par costs 35.00$

The only other issue 1st gen guys have complained about is a leak in the upper hose. Other than that our AC is as cold as ICE.

I know this is an older post but I am having the same issue mostly. I have a 2nd Gen though. Is there a similar known issue with A/C?

Unfortunately I know little about the 2nd gens. Sorry I cannot help.
