Delicious. I'm going to buy these tomorrow now that I've seen that.

I changed the ones in my car and there was actually some mould growing on one.
The worst part is that is only the first half of what I pulled out of there.... The floor mat was almost covered when I got done! I'm pretty sure something furry placed that crap there which means that it likely had some urine and feces mixed in. I didn't care to inspect it that closely :what:

How to Replace or Check the Blower Motor (ticking or buzzing when the air ven...

Have any of you tried those activated charcoal filters? To remove smells as well?
I bought some carbon filters made by Premier about 3 months ago. I haven't noticed much of a difference (truck already does a decent job of filtering out outside odors with just the standard filters), but they were inexpensive.

Subed for future reference. I'll be replacing mine next spring. Started making noise today. Great write up! Checked Rock Auto, Amazon and eBay for the TYC part. Prices are about the same from all three, but Rock Auto doesn't offer free shipping, I'll probably get it from Amazon, since they sell it directly and not some unknown Amazon or eBay seller.

Part numbers are, TYC 700175, Nissan 27226-EA010.

While I have a decent tool collection, I do not have the 5.5mm socket needed to replace the blower motor. While not perfect, a 7/32" socket works well. Thanks for the great picts of the removal process!

I wish there were more easy projects like this on here with PICTURES.
I have two Frontiers but my daily driver is my 1988 Mazda B2200 truck that I bought in 1994. I'm on a Mazda Truck board and they have a special section for How-to articles with photos, I've written about 10 on there.

That said: I've had my '98 Frontier since 2004 when it had 100K (now 204K) and my 2004 since 2011, and they haven't needed much. Nothing on the 2004, but on the 1998 I did R&R starter, alternator, radiator, oil pump, fan clutch, fan blade, and didn't take photos or do a write up, can do that "next time", I'm decent at that having been an air-cooled VW mechanic decades ago.

For my '88 B2200, I've had to replace the AC compressor several times, the evaporator once, rebuilt the engine, even did a blower motor and blower resistor write up along with fixes for headlight switch, visors, etc.

So I volunteer to do my share here, but note that my two Frontiers are 4-cylinder and 5-speed, not a ton of those here. However, my daughter has a '98 Pathfinder which is same V6 as early Frontiers, did the dreaded #6 plug replacement readily with help from this site, also replaced distributor, coolant bottle, front CV drive shaft on that (nice YouTube tutorial on that).

Just replaced my blower motor today - 32k miles into ownership.

The issue is that the motor is a brushed design, and not brushless - the ticking you hear is the worn commutator and brushes, not the bearing. It can't be fixed. Just replace it.

I too was driving my 2012 to work on a frigid NE Ohio morning, and realized it was cold in the cab! I quickly deduced I had no blower. Turned radio down and tried all the speeds - nothing.
Opened hood once I was at work, looked and checked 15A fuse - it was good. Had ignition key on and blower on, and rapped the relay. nothing, Whacked the bottom of the blower motor - nothing.
So... off to look for a common everyday 5.5mm socket. None to be had. Got one from buddy, pulled the motor and bench tested with a battery charger on 2A. Much to my surprise...it spun! Set that sucker up to 10A and reconnect. Sparks flew and that sucker spun up to full speed. Other poster was dead on correct - this is a good little blower Nissan puts in.
So here I sit in my man cave, typing this, wondering what I am gonna pull next.
Since the inside is already apart, I suppose the resistor should come out next. Does anyone here know what the thing should measure in ohms across the leads?
Best way to test the relay? I so Hate blind part ordering.
I just had to post because I read down through this entire thread, and found everyone has run into the exact same things I have. The pictures were stellar.
Will post again and let everyone know what I find from here.

This write up is for a 2nd gen Frontier or Xterra ('05+) with either motor (V6 or 4 cyl).

Tools needed:

Small Phillips head screwdriver
Socket wrench
5.5 mm socket
Needle nosed pliers (or similar tool for removing the electrical connector)
Optional: vacuum or air hose (for removing dust)
Optional: cabin air filters

This project will take 30 to 60 minutes.

About a year ago, my '09 SE started making a soft ticking or clicking sound (it sounded kinda like crickets) whenever the A/C, heater, or vent were turned on. This sound can either be an indication of debris stuck in the blower motor, or it can just be a bearing in the motor making noise. It didn't bother me for the longest time. Then a couple weeks ago, when I turned on the truck, the ticking sound was suddenly much much louder. It could be heard clearly over my normal radio volume and the blower motor occasionally started buzzing while I was driving. I have no idea whether or not that was an indication of imminent failure, but I couldn't live with the sound anymore.

The PN for the blower motor is 27226. I ordered a generic non-OEM brand from Rock Auto for $41. The Nissan brand motor is $148 from Courtesy Parts. I couldn't justify spending that much more for the Nissan one, especially since I know that the Nissan ones are prone to bearing noises.

How to:
To access the blower motor, you have to remove the lower glove box. It is held in place by five screws (two at the top, two at the bottom, one on the right side). I also removed three plastic trim pieces - the small light colored piece of plastic that goes over the screw on the right side of the glove box; the piece directly below that that wraps around the bottom of the door sill; and the triangular piece on the right side of the footwell near the front.

EDIT: Removing the lower glove box is not necessary, but doing so gives you much better access.

Here is what you will see when you remove the lower glove box. The blower motor is housed in the roundish piece of black plastic on right side of this picture, near the bottom.





Here is a close up of where the blower motor is located. (In case you were wondering, the black trap door above the blower motor is where the cabin air filters are housed. This would be a great time to change them since the trap door is so accessible.)





Next, you need to remove the electrical connector. There is a plastic tab at the bottom that needs to be pushed up in order to pull this piece out (I used needle nosed pliers).





This is the bottom of the blower motor housing with the electrical connector removed. There are three screws on the bottom of the housing that have to come out. These require a 5.5 mm socket. Two of the screws are at the front and one is at the back. This is where I ended up removing the triangular shaped plastic trim piece - it was impossible to get to the front right screw with that piece in the way.





Once those three screws are removed, the blower motor will just fall right out. If you are replacing it because of a ticking noise, check it for debris. If there is debris present, you can clean the motor and put it back in. In my case, the motor was dusty but there was no debris present that would explain the noise. Here is the old motor (top) next to the new one.





Installation is the reverse of removal. Put the new blower motor in and tighten the three screws. It only goes in one way - there is an outlet that will line up with the electrical connector.





Pop the electrical connector back into place.





Turn the key on and make sure the blower motor is working properly before putting the glove box and plastic trim pieces back on. I found the glove box was easiest to reinstall when I put the bottom two screws in first.

Wanna hear something funny...I am doing this and my blower motor fan has some kind of a cowl cover over it where the nuts arent easily accessible. If you pull back the corner where the screws are you can see the nuts but I'm tempted to cut the thing away??
