look on 1 of the Xterra sites someone has made some out of some sort of composite material

On my 00 i used a piece of 3/8 steel that covered just the engine and trans. really minumal but I wheeled it for years with out a problem.

The Xterra recommendation is a good place to start. Some of their members used cutting board material to make their skids. Yea, it isn't exactly as strong as steel but it will hold up and it weighs a lot less so the mpg impact isn't that bad.
