higher mpg numbers

I'm working on trying to get my 98 4x2 4 cylinder Frontier as fuel efficient as possible. See my website at www.maxmpg.org. I also have a Yahoo forum of the same name. I'm obviously not into offroading and getting huge horsepower numbers, what I'm after is efficiency. I'm up to 28 mpg in the city. I generally don't speed much, I run my tires at 42 psi, and am modifying the engine for efficiency. My first big project is my radiator cooling fan. I removed the clutch driven fan and installed an electric one. It runs like a champ and boosted my mpg more than I thought it would. Previously I was getting only 23 to 27 mpg but now I'm getting consistent 27 to 28 in the city and over thirty miles per gallon on the highway. I'm currently building an aerodynamic cap that will slope from the top of the cab down to the tailgate. My next engine project will be to change from power to manual steering. Any ideas on how to accomplish this? I don't think Nissan ever made a manual sterring box for the Frontier. Does anyone know of another type that will bolt in? I also would like to put narrower, low rolling resistance tires. I like the Cooper tires mention in the previous post. I currently have 215/65 15 tires but I don't know which of the Cooper tires would be the best match for a narrower tire. I don't understand their sizing system. Any ideas? I want to keep the diameter as close as possible to what it is now so my mph and odometer readings will stay accurate. Thanks for any info.

Getting back to your question about tire sizes.
Mertic tires first number tread width/contact patch, second number aspect ratio, letter speed rating, third number rim size. You'll have to convert the first 2 numbers to inches to figure sizes in the Cooper tires. Once you have the circumference of the two tires you can figure out the ratio/percentage of speed difference. Divide the larger number by the smaller, subtract 1 and multiply by 60 (or whatever speed you drive at) and this will tell you the speedometer variance.

2.54 centimeters to the inch.
pi = 3.14 inches
d = diameter (rim size + (2 x sidewall)
treadwidth x aspect ratio = sidewall
c = circumference
pi x d = c
3.14 x d = c
3.14 x (rim size + (2 x sidewall) = c

As long as you do the math the same way for both tires the variance won't change. I like you was wanting more efficiency, though I'm not quite a zealous as you are. I use my truck as a work truck. The Cooper/Mastercraft tires are the same for dealer comparison/price. You may find one dealer near you and not the other, the tires are the same just a different name embossed on the side.

MPG

Does anyone have any real world numbers for better mpg for the 2005+ Frontiers? I know several people have intake, exhaust, etc. upgrades, but wanted to know if anyone has tracked mileage long enough to get solid numbers. I don't want to hurt my mpg with any performance mods. Increased horsepower AND mpg is a great thing. Thanks.
try removing your a/c compressor, lines, and condencer. you will gain more horsepower + weight reduction= better mpg. and if mpg is all that you are worried about
try removing your cruse control, power windows, radio/speakers, spare tire, ect....
the list goes on. but the question is do you need those things? some people do and some people dont. if you can then more power to you. but other peoples needs are different then yours. so dont cut them down because they dont share your veiws. i'm also looking to get a hybrid maybe the nissan altima when it comes out in 2007. but i still need my truck. from towing to offroading, i need the power to do those things. so i get two vehicals, ones a gas saver for comutting and the other is for work and play. its my hard earned money. i'll spend it the way i please :D im also a vet.
i just got back form iraq. but i still have dreams and thats what i joined for. to protect our dreams. your and mine alike. so dream away... :D
Thank you for your service

Jojo,

Thank you for your service to our country, you are to be commended for putting your life on the line to protect our freedoms.

I drove vehicles without air conditioning until I retired 5 years ago. At this point in my
life I think I'll have the air conditioning. I do drive a lot less and at slower speeds than
I used to. I don't use near as much gasoline as I did in my younger years.

I also tend to get better highway mileage with the cruise control than without it. I guess
I do not keep a steady speed when left to my own devices.

i also drove 5 years without a/c. but it didnt help with the gas milage. being young and dumb, always street racing, couldnt keep my foot off the gas. but now that im older i traded my 200sx se-r for my frontier. now i play off the road insted of on it.
Well, I joined this board just to chime in on this nasty debate. Nice to meet all of you.

On to the point: jdham, I commend you for your efforts in getting better mileage out of our trucks, but that's where my commendation ends. I don't know which of your few mature brain cells exploded when Jboat made his comment, but you need to take a pill. Seriously, man. Have a sense of humor.

Secondly, I understand how you can interpret SilverSE05's comments as spit in your face, but you have to realize that opinion is his right as a US citizen to have. Our ancestors' sacrifices made that possible. The days of the draft are over. Nobody forced you to become a soldier. There is nothing glamorous about going to war. If you didn't understand that when you joined, then you were seriously misguided and/or disillusioned. We all respect your contribution to our country, but don't demad our sympathy, and certainly don't call board members your enemy for exercising the rights you aim to protect. If you don't respect these rights, then for what reason are you sacrificing your life? Of course, I could go on to explain your reasons without all the facts just as you did to our board members using the same mainstream media psychobabble; but that would invariably be reduced to a discussion of penis length and overcompensation, which explains nothing. So, I'll just ask you to ponder that question.

It's actually the other way around, bud. One gets more expensive things (4x4, lifts, etc etc.) to make up for what they lack in real life, when in fact they rarely actually use the ability. Why do you think so many people are driving SUV's as opposed to minivans these days?

I did not get a 4x4 because I knew I would rarely need it, if ever at all, so tell me oh-wise one, why should I have gotten it? I have nothing I need to compensate for :p[/quote]

Whoa Whoa Whoa.... This thread has gotten serisouly out of stray. WOW... blatenly attacking others who love the same truck that you love (or I would have assumed for joining the club). Heres the thing... there is a really really good chance that I proly have dropped more money into my truck than 90% of everyone on here if not the full 100%. Trust me when I say that it's not because I'm lacking something, or I'm trying to live out my HS deluted dreams or anyother psyco babble. I can tell you exctaly why I have done so much to my truck and spent so much money on it, One simple reason. I LOVE MY TRUCK!!! Is that really so hard to buy? Bottom line... everyone has there own opinion, there own tastes, there own dreams.. ect.

And as to where the thread started, I'm all about better MPG baby.... if I can save a few bucks at the pump and still get to ride in my prode in joy.. I dont think I can see a down side in that at all. He is very right about replacing the clutch driven fan, it has a dramitic effect on both MPG and HP. Diddnt think you could improve both huh?? LOL..

BTW being an hybrid has nouthing to do with the drive trane at all. To be a (what is most commonly reffered to as) an Hybrid.. all is has to be is an electric motor attached to a gas motor or Vice Versa. Has nouthing to do with the transmission, or how much or how little the MPG's are, or where that power is transferd to once it leaves the output shaft of the motor.

I travelled to BC last week and got 11.8l/100km which converted is 28.65MPG Same as you . Not so bad for a 4X4.

Here is what you need to know in tire sizes...

Example: 265/75x17
265 = tread width in millimeters
75 = 75% of tread width is the sidewall height (again in metric)
17 = wheel diameter in inches

So....
265 X .75 = 198.75mm sidewall height
198.75 x 2 (lower sidewall and upper sidewall) = 397.5mm
397.5 / 25.4 (mm per inch) = 15.6
15.6" (side walls) + 17" = 32.6" tire height.

Simple right? PM me and I can send an Excel file that will help you calculate what size tire you would need for a given RPM at a couple of different speeds such as 55 and 70.

Hope this helps
Props for starting this thread, brother. I too am interested in conservation. That's why I commute in a VW TDI that gets 48 MPG running BD-99 (99% Biodiesel.) As for the Frontier, I'm really interested in converting it to run on Ethanol (E85.) Here's a link to a kit out of Brazil (where most cars run on Ethanol already) I wonder about your thoughts on it's feasibility, and implications. The site says Nissan vehicles aren't compatible with their connector, so I've emailed them and asked them to elaborate.

http://abcesso.com/e85-conversion-kit.html

Interesting about the electric fan, can you elaborate? Where did you get the fan, how did you hook it up?
Following is the response from Flextune (in case you were interested.)

Flextune is normal working in almost every car,the problem whit some car have a diffrent connector type who is not fitting Flextune.So here you need to find a solution get get it fit.We are working to get adapters,but it is very difficult to find this produserc.

Best Regard

I suppose we should allow the Brazillian some lattitude as English is obviously not his first language. I don't know about you, but my Portuguese stinks! :)
