I have a Pioneer AVIC D2, and had a prob with it (or so I thought)...

When it would rain, I had no music. My head unit would work, as in it would power on, display the screen, show the cd's playing, etc.... but I had no sound. I thought that it was the HU messing up, so I switched it out for a different one.

So I installed a new Pioneer AVH 3200 dvd, and it was great. And then, last night, it rained for a few hours.

This morning, I got in the truck, turned the key, and for about 3 seconds, I had music and sound, but then, NOTHING! it just cut off, in the same way as with the old Pioneer Avic D2.

I looked around, under the hood, at the grommets between the door and the chasis of the cab, and I cannot find any water.

So can anyone help? Have any ideas?

I had a CD player in an old car that would cut power to the speakers if one of the speaker output wires was shorted. Back then (highschool) I was just learning and used the twist-and-tape method of splicing. When one would come loose and the speaker wire would contact metal - the headunit would cut out power.

Since your problem is rain-related, I am guessing that you probably are getting water inside the doors. Then, the speaker terminals get wet and eventually short to ground. The Avic goes into protection and cuts power to the speakers. I would start by checking your doors and seeing if there is any rainwater getting to the speakers. If so, you might want to put some foam baffles around them to keep them dry.

hmmm, ok, so if the HU would go into a protection mode, this would make sense that I heard no sound from any of the speakers...

Where can I find foam/ waterproof baffles, and can you recommend any?

I've used some from Crutchfield before, which can be found here.

Crutchfield.com - baffle

You might try to search them out on google to see if you can find them cheaper (not that they are expensive).

Also, if you are getting a lot of water into one of the doors, you might want to check out why. Turn the radio on and take the hose and spray each one of the doors/windows/seals. When the music cuts out - you've found the culprit.
