Hey guys I posted this over on the newx.org. I wanted to get feed back on your site since there have been fronty's with this issue as well.

I have had the x to 4 different dealers they all tell me it's not the timing chain. I have had it to a local shop who my parents be going to for 20+ yrs and all he has is nissan techs working there and he states its not the timing chain. Wtf is it then. I been going to dealers since it started at 50k i now have 64k on the clock out of warranty, I have the receipts from the dealers stating they looked into the whine.. please help, Note it really makes this sound on 1st start up and when the engine is warm it goes away...

I have put a new serp belt and tensioner on it already

the local shop scoped the motor they can hear a faint whine in the engine which could be the timing chain, I played the youtubevideo for him he can hear it clear as day. The shop is going to to take off the drive belt on Friday to do more searching around. They are charging me 0 dollars for all the diagnostic work. Going to leave it over night so they can hear what the X sound like on 1st start. They said if it is the timing chain they can do everything for $650 with a 12 month 12k warranty the shop is ASE cert, they have very good reviews. My question to everyone if they confirm 100% it is the timing chain do you think nissan would fix it in good faith since i have 10 documents from all 5 dealers when I brought it to them while I was under warranty complaining about the whining sound they never heard

I said on the other forum that it is not your timing chain. It is your alternator.

Why can't you just remove the serpentine belt and see if the noise goes away?

I wish I could with my work schedule, and limited tool selection it's kind hard
All you need is a ratchet or breaker bar to hold the tensioner so the belt can be pulled.
My Pathfinders whine was a higher pitched sound.

Bad News

Your x sounds exactly like my frontier before I had the timing chain replaced. I took mine to the dealership and explained the noise. At first the didnt belive me so I mentioned that I was the only frontier with the issue and seemes to be a growing problem. They took it out back and did some poking around and sure enough, it was the timing chain.

The 4.0 V6's had and issue with inadequate nylon timing chain tensioners. They would wear down and start whining, the eventualy start making metal to metal contact. Listen to this guys truck....

He's to the point of metal to metal contact. From the sounds of your viedo your not quite there yet.

All said and done my truck purrs like a kitten and my wallet is $960 dollars lighter. Best of luck.

update 06/22/2010

i took the drive belt up started the X up. the whine is not as bad but there is a faint whine but not much as when the drive belt is on. I checked all the pulleys they seem fine with no excess movement and they spin as they should. I am assuming my x would make the same sound as the fronty with the VDQ4.0 engine. But the conses is it is not the timing chain. I called nissan usa I have to get a re-diagnosed by a Nissan dealer to see if they would cover it in good faith. so i am dropping it off Wednesday and see what they say. If it's not the timing chain and they don't know what it is I guess I will have a jet engine sound/ super charger sound under the hood.

any other ideas what it might be. I heard about a plastic piece that can break and has to be epoxyed back on I forget what it is

Just saying, your x sounds exactly like my truck did before the timing chain was replaced.
