Help Diagnosing Newly Discovered Light Flicker

3413 Views 16 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  FrontierSE4x4
Hi all. I recently noticed that I have been having an intermittent flickering of the lights on my dash when toggling back and forth between the driving lights and headlights. It does not do it every time...only sometimes. I have never picked up on this before so I figured I would run it by you all to see if you had any suggestions/thoughts as to why this might be occurring. I recently installed a new battery, and checked that the connections were snug. I also recently pulled out the blower motor to make sure there wasn't any debris hiding in there after changing the cabin filters. Any thoughts you have would be much appreciated.
**I tried uploading a video but I guess it won't accept mpeg files, but I could send you a clip through email/facebook if you are that interested in being a good samaritan. ::wink::

What are "driving lights"?

What your picture and video show is a relay, but the headlight and foglight relays are in the relay box (Intelligent Power Distribution Module Engine Room or IPDM E/R). It's a plastic box under the hood, on the passenger side near the firewall (aft of a smaller plastic box). There is a relay for the trailer lights in the location your're showing (I believe).
Driving lights are the corner marker lights turned on without the headlights. The reason why I showed the picture of the trailer lights relay is because that is where the loud obnoxious click sound comes from.
OK. I call those parking lights but am open to correction. I think that tow light relay is what is making the noise. Try disconnecting it and see if the noise goes away.
Kurt. I did disconnect the tow harness and the clicking sound is gone. That is why I would have to think there might be something going on it with the harness or one of the relays...but not sure how to be sure of what it is.

Cool. I turn them on when I am driving..so they're driving lights.
Relays do click when they work. May just be operating normally. You can test it by applying voltage to the input terminals and checking for continuity across the output terminals. Or you can just replace it; small relays like that one are cheap.
