Help Diagnosing Newly Discovered Light Flicker

3421 Views 16 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  FrontierSE4x4
Hi all. I recently noticed that I have been having an intermittent flickering of the lights on my dash when toggling back and forth between the driving lights and headlights. It does not do it every time...only sometimes. I have never picked up on this before so I figured I would run it by you all to see if you had any suggestions/thoughts as to why this might be occurring. I recently installed a new battery, and checked that the connections were snug. I also recently pulled out the blower motor to make sure there wasn't any debris hiding in there after changing the cabin filters. Any thoughts you have would be much appreciated.
**I tried uploading a video but I guess it won't accept mpeg files, but I could send you a clip through email/facebook if you are that interested in being a good samaritan. ::wink::

Thanks for your reply. Not that I know of. I only removed and reinstalled the 4 mounting screws that the bottom of the blower motor in place.
So a quick update. The clicking sound I am hearing is coming from the blue...I'm guessing it's a relay when I switch the driving lights on and off. It is located near the passenger side door behind the kick panel. Can someone help identify what that is and is it something anyone knows a part number for by chance if the clicking indicates it needs to be replaced?

Thanks!!

I took a video to try and help show what it is I am trying to describe. How do I upload a video? It tells me it won't accept MP4 format.
Thanks for the tip.

Here is the link of the sound I am hearing.

Driving lights are the corner marker lights turned on without the headlights. The reason why I showed the picture of the trailer lights relay is because that is where the loud obnoxious click sound comes from.
Kurt. I did disconnect the tow harness and the clicking sound is gone. That is why I would have to think there might be something going on it with the harness or one of the relays...but not sure how to be sure of what it is.

what ive' always thought:
parking lights are amber/orange
driving lights are clear
the frontier doesn't have driving lights
Cool. I turn them on when I am driving..so they're driving lights.

I hear you, sometimes I like to drive with them on too like if it's near dusk. It's actually not legal in most states to drive with them on without headlights (why not?!) but cops don't seem to care. I kind of wonder the reason cars even have the option to turn parking lights on without the headlights. The only use I've seen is when you remote start a vehicle and they light up, that's handy.
Yeah I agree. The previous owner of my truck actually installed a switch on the dash near the mirror adjust that says "driving lights." I have never seen it have any affect when I push the switch.
Relays do click when they work. May just be operating normally. You can test it by applying voltage to the input terminals and checking for continuity across the output terminals. Or you can just replace it; small relays like that one are cheap.
Yeah, I have read that relays do click, but this seems so much louder than normal. I never recall, in the two and a half years I have owned the truck, being able to hear the click this loud. An occasional flickering of the headlights also seems to happen in conjunction with the "clicking" when it is really cold outside as I toggle back and forth on the light switch. If it was just the clicking, I wouldn't be on this wild goose chase. The occasional flickering of the headlights is what has me more concerned.
I tested the relay terminals for continuity with my multimeter and all wires seemed to check out. :-?
