Wondering if anyone knows if there's a radio head unit with OBD2 connectivity? It would be sweet to see things like MPG and all the other sensors through the head unit display.

Yep, already aware I can do it with my Ipod, or laptop, but would be nice if it already came integrated into something like the stereo and not have to use auxiliary equipment.

I've got it setup in my rodeo on a computer based system, click on the link in my signature to see more.

I'm currently hunting more computer/lcd/powersupply/controller parts to start this project in my frontier... also, centrafuse.com has released their new version of the vehicle - based media center software along with support for MS auto, an OS specifically designed to run very efficiently and reliably in a vehicle.

I've had the system in my rodeo for over two years with absolutely no issues what so ever. WinXP stripped down... 1.6ghz atom with 1gb ram, 160gb hard drive now, even banging around on the trails doesn't bother the hard drive a bit, temperatures below 8F bother it a bit, but no problems other than that.

We really do need more options for open-source head units though. I can't wait to see a head unit running Android OS ready for some crazy-wild customizations for consumers.

if you want a OBD2 and to watch your MPG. on top of all that get a little more proformance out of your truck. you just might want to invest in a bullydog gt programer. its a great chip and i made a custom plate so its not on my window like a gps system. tell me what you think

That looks pretty good. I am a bit curious myself as someone above said to see if anyone opens an android based OS headunit as well. That would be pretty damn cool.
You guys do realize that android is owned by Google, and I honestly doubt Google is going to jump into the business of car stereo. They are already pretty deep into computers/internet and cell phones.

On the other hand, if someone like Alpine, Pioneer, Kenwood, or Clarion were to pursue the venture with Google it might get a bit farther.

You are asking for things with very little market demand, chances are slim it will occur.

It's always fun to dream though....

Yeah, yeah. Android is going big though on full size intel powered computer systems, there's already a few netbook set to release running their "chrome" OS. There's front-end media software developers ready to start development for chrome OS.

Right now, there are a few linux written media front end software packages available, but their support is very limited. OBD, GPS, GPU rendering, etc... is pretty stank right now.

Centrafuse.com seems to be the best out there, I've been using centrafuse for a few years ago and it's just damn awesome.

Bluetooth support is fantastic, Sirius/XM support is SWEET with DVR functions and custom channel/list views along with HD radio support. Steering wheel controls through USB/Serial is fully supported, OBD support is VERY versatile with lots of plugins to go beyond the built in centrafuse OBD functions, USB camera inputs are already ready to roll, Ipod/iphone/external USB storage is absolutely just sweet, super fast, easy to browse, etc. .. I could go on and on, Centrafuse is just awesome, it's worth the price... As long as you spend some time customizing Centrafuse to do what you want it to do, it's just sweet. Roadrunner/Riderunner is a great FREE alternative, but it sure does require a bit lot more of customization to get it to do what you like, although roadrunner/riderunner supports about the same hardware that centrafuse does.

But, yes, if you don't want to go wild with computer shi*, the bullydog looks sweet!

android is NOT running on any full sized intel powered computer systems. if it is its news to me. android is a mobile OS for smartphones. hence the G1 and a couple of HTC phones but the latest is the MOTO droid.

Android is an OS.. based on a Unix platform, like linux, it'll run on anything if you make it, haha... But yes, that is absolutely true, Android is widely known as the latest and greatest thing to hit the Mobile phone platform besides iPhone OS and WebOS (palm)

I think it would make a great OS for such a system, solid, small, simple to write for, high performance on lowspeed hardware.
Chrome is google's other OS that is making it's way into the world to make cloud computing the default for all computer users.

I have seen recent posts on developer boards that there is in fact front-end touch screen based vehicle media system software already in the making for Android/Chromium OS

We're getting off topic though, lol.
If you're not looking for lots of a headache of installation, the bullydog is sweet. It's known to support our trucks 100% and widely used on the nissan forums. There are other companies out there that build small OBD "gauge" monitor kits.

Yes, andriod is a distribution of linux, and like every other distribution, whoever, is packaging it up is who "owns". In turn who "owns" it will also be in charge of where it is headed overall (target market(s), supported device(s), etc.).

If one opted to get extremely technical, any linux distribution that is not exactly like it comes from the distributor, is a variation/distribution of it's own.

Android is geared toward cell phones, and personal media devices (see archos) NOT car stereos. It might logically get put on some of the netbooks (again, cell phone geared). No matter where it ends up, Google will have a large finger in the pie and thus major influences over the entire OS.

At best, Google has started on a very long uphill battle to compete with the likes of Apple and Microsoft. They started in computers and have branched down into gaming consoles, cell phones, and car stereos. Google has started with internet search engines, and is now designing tools/apps that it supports based on the overall desires of Google. It might reach car stereos one day, I doubt anyone here will be alive to see it.

If someone wanted to, they could probably put linux in a car stereo. It would be custom and most likely a one off unless the person had a lot of friends, or could get a lot of attention with what was accomplished. A lot of times, people put linux on things just to say they did it.
