The first time I did it the "right way". ie took off the wheels, sanded em, prepped em etc. unfortunately they came out kinda matte looking, i think because it started to get a little foggy when i started to paint. and it was a complete pain for someone with 2 kids, 2 business's, and a job.

anyway I wasn't going to do all that again, so here's the half assed guide to wheel painting!

1) prep:
-I slapped some blue masking tape over the caps, and cut around the edge with a razor blade
-washed the wheel with a sponge and water
- did a quick wet sand
- cut out a 17" hole out of a big piece of cardboard

2) Paint
3 light coats of rust-oleum "high performance wheel". Note the cap is matte black but it's more like a semi gloss

3) done (truck is filthy)

Got the idea from having done the same thing on one of my supermoto wheels:

Nice! I did the same thing to my old wheels except I used poster board to "mask", still got over spray on the tires, nothing a wad of 00 steel wool couldn't take care of. Best part of half assed painting: half assed touch-ups!

If it was a gloss black you used, and you didn't spray it on wet enough (heavier coat) it will make it look dull or matte. If you feel it, it should feel kinda rough if that is the problem. Doing thin coats to get a good base, then spray last coat a little heavier to "flow out" works best.

Thumbs up, looks good anyways. And most people will never notice.

didnt you get overspray all over your brakes? would look like **** to have a half painted caliper...
sorry left that part out, i put a rag over the calipers to take care of any overspray. as far as overspray on the tires, well they're black anyway and paint doesn't stick so good there. overall very very pleased with the half assed painting!

per request here's some pics of the bike. i run a supermoto school. for those that don't ride it's racing on both dirt and asphalt at the same time. here's some pics that just happen to be on my work computer. the yellow cb isn't mine, but mine is getting painted just like it so it'll look the same:

If all you want to do is paint the rims all you need to do is scuff the with a 600 grit scotchbrite pad and clean them with lacquer thinner and paint. I worked in a micro body shop and have sprayed.many rims with base coat and clearcoat and they turn out perfect and it will last
